Amaal Mallik: It was Vishal and Shekhar who brought EDM into Bollywood

Amaal Mallik is one of those composers of today with the ability to incorporate EDM (electronic dance music for the uninitiated) seamlessly into his songs.
Right from his debut composition, 'Sooraj doobahain...' (Roy), his comfort level with EDM is apparent. While 'Zindagi aa raha...' is country meets EDM, 'Chal wahanjaate...' is a melodic dubstep, jazz and poppish production with an Indian classical melody line.Even 'Chaar Shanivaar' (All Is Well) being a desi track has an influence of EDM with big build-ups of dhol mixed with synth.

Ask him how he manages to do this, and Amaal says, “It was Vishal and Shekhar who brought EDM into Bollywood, but I’ve been told by many that I’m this go-to guy for EDM, which is awesome but I've moved on from EDM... With Hero, finally the doors have opened for love stories. I am finally getting offers to do love songs. Every time I do a dance track it’s like I'll get a heart attack, because it depends heavily on the video, the hook line, the stars and the promotion. Any of these factors fail, the song fails. Whereas making a love song is lesser stress, it touches people even if there is no great video for it.”

Coming back to EDM, Amaal says, he only uses it where it’s needed. “My EDM outings 'Sooraj Dooba Hain,' 'Zindagi Aa Raha Hoon Main,' 'Chal Wahan Jaate Hain' are melodically very different songs. I have mixed up the genres.”
