Bollywood: Ketan Mehta’s film about 19th century painter Raja Ravi Varma and his muse Sugandha has a soundtrack that will gladden Indian classical music lovers. Composer Sandesh Shandilya’s music and Manoj Muntashir’s lyrics stay true to the mood of the time.
The title track starts off with a loop of the phrase ‘rang rasiya’ in a variety of inflections.Sunidhi Chauhan is a versatile powerhouse in this classical track, and Kirti Sagathiya hits the high notes well. Kaahe Sataye Re Piya has Roopkumar Rathod joining Chauhan in an intricately layered song that brings visions of the painter’s grandeur to mind, largely thanks to the evocative music and lyrics. The eclectic O Kamini has Sonu Nigam going melancholic. Muntashir’s lyrics add to the angst. Shandilya brings Sufi music fixture Kailash Kher on board for the spiritual and rustic Anhad Naad Jaga De.

Anwar Khan and his party add a Rajasthani folk flavour in some portions. The heavily classical Sun Balam grows on you, because of Rajashwari Pathak’s passionate rendition. The album ends with a remix of Rang Rasiya, blending electronic music with classical notes. It is not the kind of soundtrack you’ll hear on the radio or play while cruising in your car but is worth a listen.
