Music review: Laal Kaptaan

Saif Ali Khan-starrer, 'Laal Kaptaan' is an action drama written and directed by Navdeep Singh. The album has been composed by Samira Koppikar, who is known for the powerful 'Maati Ka Palang' in 'NH10' and also for her husky-voiced renditions of 'Aaj Phir Tum Pe' ('Hate Story 2') and 'Mohabbat Barsaa Dena Tu' ('Creature 3D').

In this album, Samira has created an eerie soundscape for the first song, 'Kaal Kaal', using percussion and stringed instruments in tandem. Brijesh Shandilya and Dino James’ rendition is noteworthy.

The next, 'Red Red Najariya' with its generous use of harmonium and sarangi in the composition, will initially remind you of 'Kajra Re' ('Bunty Aur Babli'). Saurabh Jain’s rustic lyrics work perfectly for Shreya Ghoshal’s honey-voiced rendition of the track.

Kailash Kher and Brijesh work their magic in the next, which is a chant-like track, 'Taandav'; it has additional vocals by Saurabh Lokhande. Their range as singers, gives the number all that it needs to be on your playlist.

In the last track of the album, the composer takes to the microphone with 'Lahu Ka Rang Kara' and showcases her vocal skills.
