This is definitely a great birthday present for me!” said Akon, five minutes before his concert began. And Delhiites sure did smack it with Akon, as he performed in front of thousands of fans on his birthday.
“Are you ready to party with me India?” echoed on the HUDA Grounds. The crowd burst into an impromptu “Happy Birthday To You” for Akon. The singer sang “Locked Up”, moving on to the crowd favourites like “Right Now”, “Mr Lonely”, “Smack That”, “I Wanna Love You” and the couple’s staple “Nobody Wanna See Us Together”, which saw many brave couples making out in public!
The singer, who at the beginning of the concert dedicated the song “Ghetto” to “the ghetto”, surprised many when he told the security to open the gate and let the “normal” crowd mingle with the VIP and VVIP section.

“Why is there a barrier in between? What? These people don't have money? I will pay for them, let them in, open the gates,” said Akon. While moving about the crowd, he picked a little girl and said, “There’s a lot of wonderful work being done by Mr Shetty for kids in India.”
It was Akon's birthday, but it seemed as if he was doling out surprises for his fans. He jumped into the crowd, saying, “Take me to the middle, I want to get in the middle.” He also doused himself, and the audience, with water. The stage antics continued when he came onstage in a transparent ball, and took his tee off while bouncing on the crowd. He also cut a birthday cake, and distributed it to the fans, saying, “See you all next year.”
So, does he perform any particular ritual before he goes onstage? “Oh, nah! I just get on the stage... I'm roaring to go,” laughed Akon, who was experiencing some stomach problems. “I had something to eat, which didn't go very well,” he said. “I’ve been eating too much Indian food lately and not enough water which gave me the stomach ache.” he added. “I want to thank all the Indian fans for their support. I am very excited and am looking forward to a lot more Akon in India,” he smiled. Talking of performances and concerts, he said, “I am very unpredictable, so half the time even I don't know what I will do on stage, we never really rehearse, we just get on the stage and go with it and make it work.” So what plans after the show, a grand birthday party, perhaps? “Ah! I had a party yesterday... So after the show, I'm just going to sleep,” he concluded with a smile.
