A poet’s life is a lonely journey, the only friend and companion for them being words and the smell of the freshly printed pages. So is Shomshuklla’s. Recently, at the Times of India Kala Ghoda festival, beautiful sunset on the Western skyline, formed the perfect setting as she stepped on to the podium to read out works from her three already published English poetry books, a fourth one that is in the making and her book of Bengali poems.
The museum garden was witness to her melifluous and dramatic expressions of words coming out melodiously. Apart from the reading, she also explained her style of writing, the reason behind the particular poems and their birth. Expressing her love for writing poetry on women, Shomshuklla said beauty stimulates her. And what does she draw inspiration from? “Life and its flavours, love and its contours and the scent of a man,” she said. It was indeed, the last ray of winter evening well spent.
