movie

A despondent Shalini (Tejaswini Kolhapure) leans too hard on her whiskey bottle. Your heart races as she fingers a gun placed in her dresser drawer and just when you think she’ll pull the trigger, she puts it back.

So what has driven Shalini to the edge? Well, she was once an attractive collegian being wooed by two friends – Rahul (Rahul Bhat) and Shaumik Bose (Ronit Roy). She chooses the flamboyant Rahul, an aspiring actor. One daughter Kali (Anshika Shrivastava) later, love flies out of the window. Rahul fails to find work, Shalini fails to find love.

This lands her in the arms of Bose, now a super-cop. However, he crucifies her because he hasn’t forgotten that she had slighted him for Rahul. Amidst all this, 10-year-old Kali goes missing.

In yet another case of his cinema noir, Kashyap not only has you glued to your seat unravelling the whodunit, he subtly draws you into a vortex of emotions. It’s the dark recesses of his characters that has you riveted. Check this out – the failed actor is a frustrated man, but a loving father. The tough-as-nails cop is a lousy husband, but a principled policeman. The alcoholic mother is concerned about her child, but more concerned about herself.

There are also slime-ball characters like Shalini’s brother Siddhanth (Siddhanth Kapoor) and an item girl Raakhee (Surveen Chawla) who act as catalysts. Frustrated police inspector Vijay Jadhav (Girish Kulkarni) and casting agent Chaitanya (Vineet Kumar Singh) are dealing with their own voyeurism. Human nature is captured with all its failings, frustrations and frailties. Even while the hunt for the girl goes awry, other skeletons tumble out, adding a macabre twist.

While the pace does dip in the second half, what makes Ugly tick is the searing honesty with which it is told. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but for those who are willing to let the morally decrepit live.

Summary / Analysis

PLOT SUMMARY

The film opens with Shalini (Tejaswini Kolhapure) a lonely and troubled housewife addicted to alcohol, battling depression. She contemplates suicide, hoping to evoke some reaction from her stoic second husband, police chief Shoumik Bose (Ronit Roy), who behaves as if she doesn't exist. Shalini feels trapped in the marriage as Shoumik doesn't talk, taps her phone calls and treats her like a criminal. When she is about to shoot herself in the head with her husband's gun, she is interrupted by her 10-year-old daughter (from her first marriage) Kali (Anishika Shrivastava). Unaware of her mother's state of mind, Kali asks her to call her father, Shalini's estranged ex-husband, Rahul (Rahul Bhat). Rahul is a struggling actor. It's a Saturday, and Kali wishes to spend the day with her father, as decided in the custody agreement of the divorce.

Rahul takes Kali for a drive but is preoccupied by phone calls to further his career. He ends up taking Kali for a work assignment. This irritates her. She chooses to stay in the car while her father goes to see his agent, Chaitanya (Vineet Kumar Singh) in his house. Much to his horror, when he returns to the car, Kali is missing. Chaitanya and Rahul start looking for leads. They find a local toy seller's behaviour suspicious. They chase him, but he meets with an accident and dies. They approach the police, but local police inspector Jadhav (Girish Kulkarni) does not take Rahul seriously until he realises that Kali is the step-daughter of his police-chief Bose. Bose, out of personal hatred for Rahul, orders Jadhav to accuse Rahul of kidnapping, and to torture both Rahul and Chaitanya to interrogate and punish them. A game of one-upmanship follows as Rahul and Bose search for Kali while simultaneously attempting to upstage the other. Shalini's good-for-nothing brother Siddhant (Siddhant Kapoor) and B grade actress Rakhee (Surveen Chawla) seem involved too. Rahul soon starts getting calls from the kidnapper demanding ransom. Bose traces the calls, but it turns out to be of no use. Every character now seems like a culprit as they all have ulterior motives.

Spoiler ahead - (climax)

After looking for Kali for at least six days, the cops put the clues together and finally discover Kali's dead body. They get to know that she was actually kidnapped by the toy seller, who hid her and forgot to release her since he died himself, when being chased by Rahul and Chaitanya. Siddhant and Shalini also plan to keep a bit of the ransom money with themselves before they had over the bag to the suspected kidnappers. Siddhant gets arrested with his share of the loot. Shalini leaves her share with her friend, the item girl, Raakhee.

The climax shows Rahul killing his friend Chaitanya who has orchestrated the whole ransom set-up. And Raakhee running away with the money that Shalini had left with her.
