Panch Kriti Five Elements

Story: An anthology based in the rural Indian town of Chanderi that aims to shed light on topics like environment conservation, female foeticide, gender parity and more through a collection of fictional tales.

Review: In a cinematic landscape thriving on diverse narratives, director Sannjoy Bhargv and writer Ranveer Pratap Singh attempt to weave five distinct stories addressing varied concerns. They give curated stories about social issues that have been told before as well. While the film's intentions are commendable, the execution and storytelling of each vignette fall short of leaving a profound impact.

Opening with the tale of a henpecked Pandit portrayed by the reliable Bijendra Kala, the film's initial story unfortunately stands as one of its weakest. Kala's performance, though competent, lacks novelty as it revisits familiar territory seen in his prior roles. Moreover, his rushed and unclear dialogue delivery at times hampers comprehension. Despite aiming to advocate for environment conservation with a supposed nod to PM Modi's Swachh Bharat campaign, the core message is lost in an unfocused execution.

The rest of the stories revolve around different social issues but the last one is about the everlasting love of a young man for his bride to be. It’s endearing but also predictable. And this one in particular feels totally disconnected from the overarching themes, if indeed there were any. Performances across the board range from moderate to overly theatrical. Bhargv is able to successfully capture the charm and cultural essence of rural India by using authentic locations.

Occasionally, ‘Panch Kriti Five Elements’ shows moments of potential due to its simplicity and a touch of realism. However, these instances are overshadowed by inconsistent writing and lacklustre execution. In the end, what could have been a resonating exploration of social concerns dissolves into a forgettable cinematic endeavour.
