Review: The road to hell is paved with good intentions they say. That’s exactly how Missing turns out. This mystery movie has an interesting premise that fails to create the right impact. A small girl goes missing in the dead of the night, but the parents of this little girl run around in the exotic locales of a Mauritius resort like headless chickens. In all fairness, you don’t expect shocked parents to be composed in their behaviour, but the way things play out in Missing, pushes the idea of suspension of disbelief, way beyond its limits. This hotchpotch screenplay is full of formulaic movie tropes. The execution is so amateur and the performances so absurd that the film becomes unintentionally funny.

One of the biggest problems with the film is the fact that it’s based in a Mauritian location that looks like the perfect honeymoon resort. It’s the last place you’d expect to find terror. And yet, Manoj Bajpayee’s Sushant and Tabu’s Aparna are presented in these exotic locales in picture perfect frames. Sunny beaches and fancy gardens aren’t the places where you can see yourself pulsating with fear or intrigue. The inconsistent performances of Manoj Bajpayee and Annu Kapoor don’t help the prospects of the film either. You don’t need an eye for detail to notice that Bajpayee’s attempts at being flirtatious isn’t convincing. He just seems hopelessly out of place. He does redeem himself during the latter parts of the film, but it’s a classic case of being a little too late. Annu Kapoor as the Indo-Mauritian version of Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot, is laughable. Even worse are his pronunciations of ‘merci’ and ‘s’il vous plaît’. It doesn’t help that his surname is Buddhu. Tabu’s performance, though inconsistent, is the only redeeming feature of this drab drama.

As the film moves on, the situations, the characters and the plot become more obnoxious. The suspense around the missing girl wears thin, with every passing scene. By the time the climax arrives, unravelling the mystery doesn’t matter anymore. Writer-director Mukul Abhyankar’s debut film is a half-baked thriller. With all it’s complexity he had a strong story at hand, but his vision and technique as a director doesn’t supplement his creative abilities. The background score of the film is a tad bit loud while the editing is lacklustre.

What good is a thriller that’s not thrilling? It gets worse when you start laughing at a mystery movie. Any and all prospect of this film is lost in the midst of shoddy filmmaking.
Summary / Analysis

Spoiler alert! Please do not read the following plot summary if you have not seen the film.
Sushant (Manoj Bajpayee) and Aparna Dubey (Tabu) check in to a beach resort in Mauritius with their daughter Titli. On their first night, while they are busy making love in the other room, their daughter gets kidnapped. On the morning after, both Sushant and Aparna scamper across the resort to look for their daughter but they can’t find her. The resort authorities don’t help them either. Aparna files a police complaint, and the Mauritius Police officer Buddhu (Annu Kapoor) investigates the case of abduction. Buddhu is convinced that there’s something fishy about how Sushant has reacted to the situation. He finds consistency in the mother Aparna’s behaviour, but he feels there is something suspicious about the father’s behaviour. The inspector also finds it odd that the parents don’t have a photo of the missing girl.

Sushant keeps getting a girl’s call on his mobile and he keeps sneaking into corners to talk to the woman on the phone in a romantic manner. Working on his hunch, Buddhu calls in a police sketch artist. Sushant describes the child to the artist who makes a sketch. One of Buddhu’s associates records a separate description from Aparna and later gives it to the sketch artist too. The two sketches turn out to be completely different and Buddhu’s hunch about Sushant and Aparna’s story not adding up becomes stronger. Sushant breaks down and explains that Aparna is mentally unstable. He reveals that since she can’t conceive a child, she became obsessed with a doll and started treating the doll as her child Titli. Buddhu’s investigation with Aparna though reveals opposite details. She describes an exhaustive history with Titli. Convinced that Sushant is lying, Buddhu pressures him to reveal the truth.

Scared and disoriented, Sushant confesses that he and Aparna are not married. He narrates the story of them accidentally meeting on a boat. They share the same room on the boat and they both tell each other stories of their rocked-up marriages. On the pretence of helping Aparna and her ailing 3-year-old daughter, Sushant brings her along to his resort. Sushant says he has no clue about Titli’s whereabouts though. Shocked, Buddhu decides to take Sushant corroborate his confession with Aparna. But Aparna, starts consoling Sushant and tells him he should not make up the stories just because he’s stressed about their daughter’s kidnapping. Aparna’s affirmations confuse Buddhu even more and surprise Sushant. Sushant asks Buddhu and his colleagues to give him some private time with Aparna to sort things out. He then threatens Aparna, claiming that he’s the one who kidnapped Titli and that he was working for Aparna’s husband.

Sushant then forces Aparna to run away from the hotel. They end up in an isolated part of the woods, where Aparna begs Sushant to reveal the whereabouts of Titli. Sushant then confesses that he made up the kidnapping story to just be able to runaway from the police. Just then he notices Aparna carrying a bag he’s never seen before. When he opens the bag, he finds a doll inside, wearing the same clothes Titli was when she was kidnapped. Aparna pulls out a knife and stabs Sushant in the back, taunting him about his irresponsible behaviour and statements against Titli. Inspector Buddhu meets an old man claiming that he’s looking for his daughter Titli. The old man claims that Titli is a 30-year-old woman who’s run away from a mental asylum. He then shows Buddhu a photo of Tabu as Titli.
