Kahaani 2 Story: Vidya Sinha (Vidya Balan) has only one obsession in life. She wants to see her teenage daughter Mini, who is paralysed waist-downwards, walk again. But, is this scenario as obvious as it seems? Or is Vidya an impersonator of Durga Rani Singh from Kalimpong, who is wanted for kidnapping and murder?
Kahaani 2 Review: This sequel directed by Sujoy Ghosh after a gap of four years is a whodunit that definitely serves up intrigue, but fails to keep a tight grip on proceedings throughout its duration. So unlike the first part, that hit the ground running and set a benchmark in the genre, this one lacks the shark-bite. But you do invest in Vidya Sinha, a harrowed, working mum from Chandan Nagar in West Bengal and her handicapped teenage daughter, who like most middle-class people overcome hurdles to go through the daily grind. So much so, that when Mini goes missing and Vidya meets an accident, there is a sense of void. Enter, Indrajit(Arjun Rampal), the cop-on-the-case, who is the first one to discover that the woman in a coma resembles Durga(Vidya Balan again!), a school clerk from Kalimpong, who is a fugitive-on-the-run.
Here it is important to say that the film works because Vidya the mother or Durga the murderer are both believable and solid characters. As is the cop piecing the mystery together. And, to give out anything more about the plot is unfair.
Shot majorly at night and on real locations, the film has the authentic texture. If you fell in love with Kolkata in the 2012 outing, you will love Kalimpong here. The background score gives stomach-knots (as it must) and the camera work is good.
Vidya, shorn of make-up and glamour breezes through her dual role in autopilot mode. Arjun impresses as the cop hankering for a promotion and is believable as the husband. If you have an appetite for thrillers (albeit, with some flaws) give this one a try.

In-depth Analysis
Our overall critic’s rating is not an average of the sub scores below.
Spoiler alert! Please do not read the following plot summary if you have not seen the film.
Vidya Sinha(Vidya Balan) is a middle-class working mother who lives in Chandan Nagar in West Bengal with her teenage daughter Mini Sinha. Mini is paralysed waist downwards and therefore she has to use a wheel chair. However Mini is a happy child and Vidya dotes on her.
She works extra hard because she is saving money to take Mini to America in the fond hope that the girl will walk again.
Vidya also maintains a diary where she records everything that happens in their lives on a daily basis.
One day when Vidya is away at work, her daughter goes missing. A distraught Vidya calls the nurse who takes care of Mini when she is away and finds out that the nurse has not come in to work because she has received a phone call from someone pretending to be Vidya. The caller has asked the nurse not to report for duty.
Vidya is running from pillar to post asking neighbours whether they have seen Mini. When she attempts to cross the road without looking, a car hits her hard and she goes into a coma. She is admitted by the driver of the car into a local dispensary of Dr Maity.
A sub inspector Indrajit(Arjun Rampal) is put on the case. He gets a rude shock when he sees the face of the woman who is in a coma. Her face resembles that of Durga Rani Singh, whom he has known closely and was even `married'to briefly.
Durga was from Kalimpong. She was a clerk in a school where she sees Mini Dewan, a six year old girl who is constantly getting punished. Durga becomes friends with Mini and she discovers that Mini is a victim of child abuse.
Her uncle Mohit Dewan(Jugal Hunsraj) has been touching her inappropriately and misbehaving with her. Though Mohit's mother lives in the same house, she does not protect her six-year-old granddaughter. When Durga, who was also a victim of child abuse tries to tell Mini's grandmother to free Mini from Mohit's clutches, the grandmother turns against Durga. They bribe a lady cop and they try to finish Durga off. In the meanwhile, Mini who jumps off the off of her home, injures her legs and is paralysed.
Durga regains consciousness after being beaten up by the cop. She rushes to the hospital where Mini is and actually manages to stop Mini's grandmother, Mrs Dewan from hurting Mini. Of course in the scuffle that breaks, Mrs Dewan suffers a fall and dies.
Durga is now a fugitive on the run. She picks up Mini and the two of them rush to Chandan Nagar, where they lead a quiet inconsequential existence.
In Kalimpong, Durga had also met Arun, who takes a keen interest in her and wants to marry her. However, Durga only wants to live for Mini and with her. So Arun takes a job and leaves for London.
Indrajit knows that Durga is innocent. Her diary explains everything to him.
So he is determined to see that Durga doesn't get punished and is able to fly abroad and get Mini her treatment.
However since the entire police force is after Durga, Indrajit has to be patient and play along with his seniors.
Mohit, Mini's uncle who has abused her as a child searches for Mini for eight years. He and the corrupt police woman who he hires in Kalimpong discover that Vidya and Mini are now living in Chandan Nagar as Vidya Sinha and Mini Sinha.
They are the ones who kidnap Mini and hold her hostage at an empty Mill.
When Durga regains consciousness after her accident, she goes to the bank withdraws all her savings and goes to the place where Mini is being held hostage.
Here she begs Mohit not to hurt Mini and offers to give the policewoman all the money she has. The lady cop looks tempted. But before she can act, Mohit shoots her. Then Vidya begs Mohit to spare Mini and her. However, when he refuses to listen to reason, Mini picks up a gun and shoots him.
Then Vidya and Mini escape. However the cops catch them. When she realises that she is surrounded by the police force, Vidya shoots Haldar, Indrajit's senior in the leg.
She tells him that she will blow up the whole house and all of them will perish. But she will not allow herself to be separated from Mini.
Spoiler alert ahead: Only read if you have seen the film
Haldar begs Vidya to let him go. She lets him out because he says he has an eight-year-old child. Outside Indrajit and all the other cops are deciding what to do, when the house blows up.
Assuming that Vidya and Mini have perished in the flames, the police withdraw. Haldar even manages a promotion, thanks to the late Durga Rani Singh.
So is DRS dead? And if Mini and she are dead then where are the bodies? There's an entire police contigent outside the house that blows up, yet it strikes none to check where are the charred bodies of Vidya and Mini. This is an inexcusable directorial flaw.
Of course that Vidya and Mini have flown off to America with the help of Indrajit is evident. In America, Vidya gets Mini ready for her treatment.
TRIVIA
1. After Vidya opted out, Sujoy roped in Kangana Ranaut. But due to some delays, both the actress and Irrfan opted out.

7. The bond that the protagonist shares with her reel daughter translated into real to as Vidya got along very well with the child artiste, Naisha Khanna.
