DISHOOM DELIVERS A MASALEDAR PUNCH!

Story: Star Indian cricketer Viraj is kidnapped. Can top cop Kabir and aide Junaid find Viraj - and his kidnapper?

Review: So, Dishoom has a powerful weapon - a tongue firmly in cheek.

movie

Just before an India-Pakistan cricket face-off in the Middle East, top Indian batsman Viraj (Saqib) is kidnapped. India's external affairs minister, sporting a big bindi, receives a video with a Pakistani kidnapper threatening to kill Viraj. Muttering 'Is news se dange ho sakte hain', Ms. MEA sends in India's secret weapon - surly, chain-smoking top-cop Kabir (John), assisted by Junaid (Varun). Kabir and Junaid find Ishika (Jacqueline), a hot chor, and several suspicious characters including cricket aficionado Wagah (Akshaye) and rock-faced Rahul Dev, playing Altaf from 'Abudhin', a nation of tigers and terrorists.

But can they find Viraj?

Dishoom is made electric by Junaid and Kabir's chemistry. Varun plays a funny, sunny guy with typically breezy perfection but John is surprisingly good, delivering dour, sour one-liners with deadpan panache. The one-liners are stars in themselves - whether it's Junaid scolding Kabir, "Gana pasand nahin tha, toh bol dete - music system todne ki kya zaroorat thi?" or a brilliant little to-and-fro about iPads and Lagaan, the dialogues keep you giggling, even in tense moments.

Not that there are too many nail-biters - with its careening plot, Dishoom doesn't fulfil the promise of a taut thriller but its mad, zany moments make up with entertainment. The film evokes 1990s hits, from Main Khiladi Tu Anari to Govinda's many friendly leers - presenting a new-age masala movie, full of choppers, chummas, cheetas, cheese-bhara lines and spicy dishooms.

Plus crazy cameos, including Nargis Fakhri sizzling in a bikini and Vijay Raaz as a dusty khabri who got the Americans 'Osama ka address, doodhwale se'. The cameo that really smashes it is Akshay Kumar as 'party animal Sameer', who murmurs silkily to the cops, "Kyun kiya bang bang? Humein hinsa se sakt nafrat hai,", demanding they strip to their "shots" (hilariously matching peach numbers), sporting a pout, man-bun and wicked winks with sweet-sour swagger. Saqib's competent while Akshaye has fun but for an actor of his ability, could've been sharper.

As could the entire film. If Dishoom had less fantasy - Abudhin lies somewhere between Game of Thrones and Prince of Persia - and more focus, it would be a leaner, meaner movie. Instead, it fleetingly evokes ISIS, Yazidi slaves, hooded hostages, but then rushes back to the domestic comforts of item numbers, pet dogs and ministers who say, "Call a press conference - the world needs to know."

But as an entertainer, Dishoom delivers. If you're good with laughter, not logic, Dishoom is actually two much fun.

Summary / Analysis

Spoiler alert! Please do not read the following plot summary if you have not seen the film.
Plot Summary

The film opens with a police search in a dusty room where officer Sayeed (Tarun Khanna) only finds an empty jacket and tells his senior that missing Indian cricketer Viraj (Saqib Saleem) is not there. The film cuts to one day ago when Viraj is batting for India against Sri Lanka in a tournament semi-final. Viraj's is India's cricket star and the crowd despairs when he suddenly gets a frozen shoulder. But Viraj goes indoors, bangs his arm against the wall and fixes his problem, coming out to bat and win the match.

India will now play Pakistan a day later.

However, Viraj's coach finds him missing from the hotel later on with his phone switched off too. He informs the cricket board and the minister for external affairs who says the team should return and the final be called off. Just then, she receives an email video of a man saying he's a Pakistani fan and has captured Viraj, whom he's masked and tied to a chair in the room. The fan says if the match is called off, he will kill Viraj.

The minister decides to send in Kabir (John Abraham), India's top cop, who has just discovered his girlfriend is cheating on him and is even angrier than before.
Kabir flies to the Middle East and meets officer Sayeed but refuses to go to the police department first, instead forcing Sayeed at gun-point to take him to Viraj's hotel room where he investigates. He later meets Sayeed's senior and very junior officer Junaid (Varun Dhawan), who is given small tasks like buying vegetables and finding his boss' runaway dog. Kabir likes his language and location skills and Junaid is thrilled to be assisting Kabir - but astonished to see Kabir's angry nature with him breaking his car music system, etc.

The duo sees CCTV footage of Viraj having last spoken to a mysterious girl, Sam (Nargis Fakhri), and they go to meet her. Sam emerges from a pool in a bikini and has Junaid flat while Kabir interrogates her. Sam says she met Viraj in his hotel porch and he liked her fancy car. She invited him for a drive and then to her friend's birthday party - from where he exited and didn't see her again.

Junaid takes Kabir to meet 'Khabri chacha' (Vijay Raaz) who knows everyone's secrets including Kabir's. As Kabir calms his anger down in front of Khabri on hearing about his ex, he is told to meet Sameer (Akshay Kumar), a local party animal who doesn't like girls and who also met Viraj the night he went missing. The duo go to Sameer's pool party where he flirts with them and makes them strip to their 'shots' for info - but Sameer had only met Viraj in the lobby and taken a selfie with him. Suddenly, the duo gets to hear that Viraj's phone has been found.

They rush to the ghetto where it's been tracked and as Junaid opens his car door, he knocks out Ishika (Jacqueine Fernandez), a girl running from the scene, accused of having stolen Viraj's phone. Junaid also manages to find his top boss' missing dog, Bradman, and drops him to the house, putting a GPS collar on him. Junaid gets constant calls from a Mr. Qureishi who's seen his pictures on a matrimonial website and keeps telling him how no-one in his clan likes him!

In the police department, Ishika is interrogated but she says she's only a thief and picked the phone from a stranger's pocket in a store. She gives his description to the police artist to draw - while trying to flirt with Kabir. The police see the threat video again and Kabir feels there's a backdrop of rain to it. After checking weather apps, the police find it rained a day ago in Al Jabal. They start searching locations there - where they find the kidnapper in the video trying to make a get-away. He is brought in and beaten and the full video played again - when it's seen he is only an actor giving an audition and the 'masked hostage Viraj' is giving him his lines!

Junaid sympathises with the scared actor who sees the drawing made by the police artist and recognises the man to be Altaf (Rahul Dev), a shady character from the nearby Pashtun nation of Abudhin.

The film cuts back to the night of the crime.
Viraj has just wished Sam's friend and gone outside the party venue when his phone rings and Altaf, standing near him, forces him at gun-point to pick up the phone, enter a car and wear an eye-mask. The masked Viraj is taken to meet 'Wagah' (Akshaye Khanna), a cricket aficionado who wants Viraj to fix the match and help him recover 450 crores in betting losses. Viraj can't see Wagah - he can only hear him and the whirr of washing machines in the basement he's in. Surprisingly, Viraj agrees and he's let off by Altaf who drops him at a mall. But Viraj finds a police officer and asks him for help against the betting syndicate. The officer takes him to a senior's house - but suddenly, the officer turns out to be Wagah and Viraj is his prisoner again.
There are 12 hours to go before the match.

Kabir hears Altaf has returned to Abudhin and decides to follow him - but the local police say that's not under their jurisdiction and they can't help. Kabir says he'll go anyhow and Junaid decides to go with him, despite having to turn in his badge and car. Ishika, who's been discovered to be a run-away Indian girl called Meera, trying to escape a broken family and drugs, says she knows how to get to Abudhin. As the duo leaves, Ishika cries in the restroom but suddenly, Junaid enters from the roof and offers to take her with them.

Ishika escapes the police department and the three are in a sheep truck to Abudhin where Junaid tells Ishika about Kabir's ex. He lies about Kabir having been ill and Ishika sends his ex a selfie of Kabir and herself, saying he's moved on. They slip into Abudhin and seek Altaf's location. They're told he's underground and racing through a lion's den, they go underground through a trap door, leaving Ishika outside. Down in the den, they see imprisoned girls and are told there'll be a dance and a hand-wrestling competition - they see Ishika dancing and Altaf hand-wrestling for her.

Kabir defeats Altaf and mentions Viraj. But Altaf has them surrounded by gunmen and takes Ishika away. The duo overpower the gunmen and chase Altaf, rescuing Ishika. Altaf drives into a mosque and Junaid asks Kabir to hold his action while the prayers are on. But Altaf gets shot by a sniper who's watching all along.

Then, Wagah rings Kabir and tell him to stop this chase.

Meanwhile, Wagah tells Viraj to fix the match again but Viraj refuses, despite threats to his family. A better in debt, Kamlesh, comes along and pleads with Viraj to fix the match and save him from Wagah. A shot is heard on Wagah's boat. He comes up to tell his assistant to go clean up downstairs.

Wagah goes home where his family is leaving him - the only person he has left is his beloved dog, Bradman.

The local police are having Kabir deported and Sayeed leaves him inside the plane. Junaid is upset but checks on Bradman via his GPS collar and sees him walking around a boat with a dead guy and Viraj tied up. Junaid rushes into the plane on a false hijacking charge and gets Kabir out. Ishika steals Sayeed's car keys and gives his car to Kabir and Junaid. They rush to the jetty location shown on Bradman's collar and find Wagah's boat - they go in to find Viraj strapped up in a strait jacket with a time bomb. Wagah calls them and tells them to go out on a speed boat. He says he wants 500 crore to release Viraj. Kabir gets the minister for external affairs to send Wagah the money - but Wagah still refuses to help them defuse the bomb.

There's an explosion.

At the stadium, it's time for the match but there's no sign of the players. As the audience and commentators are wondering what's happening, Wagah tells a kid in the crowd Viraj will not play. Suddenly, the kid shouts, Viraj! Wagah finds Viraj striding onto the pitch, ready to hit big. On the boat, Junaid remembered Houdini getting off a strait jacket by dislocating his shoulder. The three jump into the water where they dislocate Viraj's shoulder and get the jacket off him.

Viraj goes on to win the match which his fans, including Sam and her friend, cheer everywhere.

Junaid gets a call from the police department saying Wagah is escaping. The duo chase him via chopper and get Wagah. As Kabir leaves, Ishika is deported with him and they become a couple. Junaid gets a call from Qureishi again but this time, it's his daughter Muskaan (Parineeti Chopra) who says she likes Junaid and wants to meet up - which they do with a 1990s' style item number.
