SANJAY DUTT IS BACK
Bhoomi STORY: A shoe-smith Arun Sachdeva (Sanjay) is shattered when he discovers that his daughter, Bhoomi (Aditi) has been raped by Dhauli (Sharad) and his gang of three. The father and daughter grieve for a bit before planning revenge.
Bhoomi REVIEW: Distasteful as it may sound, rape and retribution are dominating Bollywood. After Maatr and Mom, Omung Kumar, who showed a spark with Mary Kom, seems to have fallen into the trap of making formula. And while every filmmaker argues that movies on rapes are 'socially-relevant', you keep asking yourself — is all the gore on screen justified?
Here, our very own Arun and Bhoomi are a doting father-daughter team living in Agra. They tug at your heartstrings with their chirpy baap-beti routine of cooking meals, colouring beards and combing hair. However, after a point the bittu-beti endearments rankle.
Coming to the core plot, when Bhoomi gets raped just a day before her wedding, you know which route the film will take. The insensitive cops, the lame public prosecutor, the even lamer defence and the whole court-room drama where it has become fashionable to discuss the heroine’s virginity makes you want to scream. All and sundry are authorities on India's rape statistics and the heinous act is so distastefully discussed that it almost knocks you dead.
But like it’s said, every cloud has a silver living; Bhoomi has Sanjay Dutt. Returning to the marquee after his incarceration, the actor wears the lines of his face with confidence. You can tell right away that the lion has aged but he’s got terrific screen presence.
Aditi looks vulnerable as the stuttering, sweet girl and later tries wearing a tougher demeanour as the avenging angel. Sharad is too much the caricatured villain from the 80s, mouthing over-the-top lines. The overall writing is clunky. Artur Zurawski’s camera work is efficient. Sachin-Jigar have composed a couple of foot-tapping numbers, which do not have recall but when they are playing, you find yourself grooving.
Watch Bhoomi for Dutt. He’s from that era of larger-than-life heroes who get you to applaud even when he turns a killing machine. You may not approve of his bloodlust, but you can’t fault his swagger.

Summary / Analysis
Spoiler alert! Please do not read the following plot summary if you have not seen the film.Arun Sachdeva(Sanjay) is a shoe shop owner and designer who lives in Agra with his daughter Bhoomi(Aditi). His wife has passed away leaving him to care for his bittu as he lovingly calls her. Arun spends time with his friend Tajkumar(Shekhar Suman) and is always concerned about Bhoomi, who is a wedding planner and independent minded. She is engaged to be married to Dr Neeraj(Sidhant).
There is also another sweetmeat owner in the lane, Vishal, who likes Bhoomi. When she rejects his attention, he becomes desperate. He tells his cousin, Dhauli(Sharad Kelkar) that he wants Bhoomi by hook or crook. So one day, when Bhoomi is returning from work with her trusted friend, who calls her didi, she is kidnapped by Dhauli and gang.
They take her to Dhauli’s theatre and the four men rape her turn by turn. Since they have spiked the food which they fed her, Bhoomi is very groggy. However when she returns home and realises the horror of the ordeal she has been through, she is dejected. She is due to get married the next day. However when Neeraj’s baraat comes to her door, she tells him the truth. So Neeraj returns without marrying Bhoomi. Arun is heartbroken.
He and Bhoomi mourn their loss. Outside their home, people write mean messages on the walls and scribble Bhoomi’s telephone number.
One day Bhoomi is picked up by Dhauli and gang again and warned that she is going to be killed shortly because she and her father lodged a complaint against them with the police. Dhauli throws Bhoomi off the bridge. She falls into the water and is almost drowned.
However, luck is on her side and she survives. She goes home and tells her father that they should take revenge. So father and daughter plan to kill the four men who raped her. They first kidnap Bhoomi’s self-proclaimed brother and force him to dress like a eunuch. He is so ashamed after that, he commits suicide.
They then corner Vishal who is trying to run away and castrate him. Next it is the turn of Ghulam and lastly they corner Dhauli who has just finished the shraadh puja.
Spoiler alert
A fight breaks out and Arun is hurt. However he attacks Dhauli with all his might and throws him off the same bridge from where Dhauli had thrown Bhoomi off. A long procession of women celebrating Navaratri is passing. All the women also throw their dupattas in the water making it impossible for Dhauli to stay afloat. He sinks and Bhoomi is victorious. She says—she and every Indian girl should have the freedom to move around with/without a dupatta because girls must also be given as much independence as the boys.
