A revolver covered in a pink condom, set against the backdrop of a city skyscraper. Don’t be scandalised! This is a description of the scene from a recently released
poster
of much talked about film ‘
Tikli and Laxmi Bomb
’ a movie based on the book written by
Aditya Kripalani that goes by the same title.
Just like its poster, the film will challenge the norms with its bold storyline that follows the lives of two commercial sex workers— Laxmi and Tikli —who decide to flush out men from the trade and make it a system run completely by women and safeguarded by them. Critics have termed the film as revolutionising the sex industry.
Chitrangada Chakraborty who essays the role of Tikli in the film terms her character a complete rebel with a cause. She takes upon herself to create a better place for all the female sex workers. The film also stars
Suchitra Pillai
, who plays a grey character. She is somebody who is happy with way things are and doesn’t want change. So she opposes Laxmi and Tikli’s ideas.
As for Lakshmi played by
Vibhawari Deshpande
the role taught her to convey a point rather than expressing. “As a character, Laxmi is quietly headstrong. According to the story, she was dragged into the trade. The complexity of the character has given me a chance to portray her strongly.” — As quoted in a recently published article in Times of India.
The film which was recently screened at the 23rd Kolkata International Film Festival received a good response. Besides also being an official selection at the Jaipur International Film Festival 2018, Tilki and Laxmi Bomb is also the only Indian film at the New Zealand Asia Pacific Film Festival.
The film is being compared to
Alankrita Shrivastava’s ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ owing to its bold representation of women by the online community. Soon after the poster was released, it created quite a buzz online. Here are the reactions…
