The hero of the film Sharman is completely self obsessed man with no other concern in his head except his muscles and the leading lady. The leading lady Aasha bears with him because of his star status. Director Apoorva thinks of himself as Indian answer to Steven Spielberg and Producer Shah thinks the director is screwing up the film and stopping him from becoming the next Yash Chopra. Laxman is a completely subservient spot boy. Cinematographer Shekhar is very philosophical in nature and Action Director Raka, a frustrated man rues the fact he never got a right break and hates the leading actor, Sharman. Script Supervisor Sameera is a simpleton with ideals and a secret crush on protagonist Sujal who is Chief Assistant Director, who in turn has a huge crush on Asha... But Asha doesnt even look at him.
They settle at place with bare minimal facilities run by a quirky and strange character called Setu.It all begins when on the second day of shoot itself the camera conks off... There is no option but to call for replacement and that will take two days. With no form of entertainment or communication and boredom setting in, Setu suggests a camping trip into the forest. Everyone jumps at the opportunity and they travel deep into the jungle in a relic Jonga. Off the path through the undergrowth they begin to wonder how the hell Setu can remember the way as the forest looks the same all over but they take comfort in the knowledge that Setu knows the forest. After two hours drive deep in jungle they settle near a pond for the night and as they are having beer and fun around a bonfire Setu hears a strange sound which is neither human nor animal. He goes to investigate and never returns. After a desperate search they discover his badly mauled body. Panic sets in among them and they jump into the jonga... But unfamiliarity with terrain and rush results in an accident as jonga overturns and its axle breaks... Now they are truly trapped as all around, the forest looks the same to them, not to forget the terrifying mystery of who or what could have killed Setu, since he had told them that there are no wild animals in the area. They finally figure that it could be his enemy but that theory also goes for a toss when another one of them is brutally killed. Now terror sets in... Sharman with all his muscles turns out to be the biggest coward of them all; people have to control him to subdue his hysteria. Asha feels quite let down with her hero. Raka turns out to be almost as dangerous as the unknown entity which is killing them. A severely injured Shekhar becomes a huge liability for the entire group. The subservient Laxman becomes the epitome of selfishness. Shah in his death reveals shocking things about himself. Sameera gets affected with the sudden, growing relationship of Sujal and Aasha more than the fear of death. From then on it is a desperate struggle to survive against something almost invulnerable, faster than them, smarter than them and hell bent on destroying them. But as their numbers dwindle the suppressed passions among them come forth. They realize that it is not only their lives they are fighting for, but also for their loves...Directors Note I have always been an incredible fan of the thriller genre where there is an unknown or a known element which is out to kill at random a group of people trapped in a certain situation whether it is Ridley Scott's 'Alien' or John Carpenter's "The Thing". Not to forget the "Blair Witch Project" in which the genius of the concept has gone to the extent of not showing the antagonist at all. I have titled my film based on this concept as 'AGYAAT' meaning the unknown. Thrillers of this kind are a very popular genre abroad, not to forget the success of numerous dubbed one's here in India as well. But as yet no film in the same genre has been seriously attempted with Indian actors with a story designed for Indian audience. This movie's intention would be to explore that and also would be about the emotional complexities that extreme fear would unleash and how the triumph of human spirit refuses to give in even against impossible odds. - Ram Gopal Varma
