Shobhaa De vs Shiv Sena: Most bold statements

Shobhaa De has drawn the ire of local political parties in Maharashtra. The columnist and novelist has been the target of the Shiv Sena as she chose to criticise the Maharashtra government's plan to make it compulsory for all Mumbai multiplexes to screen a Marathi film every evening, that too in the prime time slot. But this did not seem to go well with the governing authorities who chose to attack De and even spoke against her in Shiv Sena's mouthpiece, Saamna. De had only stated that cinema halls should get the choice of deciding when a regional film should be screened. Read on to know what exactly happened and what Shobhaa's response has been.

When De expressed her views, the Shiv Sena and the RPI staged a protest outside her house for insulting Maharashtrian culture. Around a 100 protesters gathered near De's Cuffe Parade residence and shouted slogans. Carrying saffron flags in their hands, they presented vada-pav and dahi to the building watchman. Reportedly, the Shiv Sena's mouthpiece Saamana was quoted saying, "Since you have termed the decision of the state government as dadagiri, let us tell you (Shobhaa)...Had Chhatrapati Shivaji, in his time, and Balasaheb Thackeray not done 'dadagiri', then your forefathers and her children would have been born in Pakistan and you would have been attending Page 3 parties in a burqa."
