Eyewitness’ mother wants Salman’s bail to be cancelled


While Salman Khan is basking in the glory of Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sushilabai Patil, mother of the prime eyewitness in the 2002 hit-and-run case isn’t too happy with the direction in which the court proceedings have veered. According to a report, she has intervened in the appeal filed by the actor against his conviction by filing a plea to cancel Salman’s bail. Though the High court has rejected the plea, Sushilabai claims that her son, Ravindra Patil, had died mysteriously and thus Salman Khan's bail needed to be cancelled. Reportedly, Justice AR Joshi dismissed the intervention application, saying that Sushilabai did not have any locus standi in the case. The HC has said that if Sushilabai has any complaints regarding foul play in her son's death, she should approach an appropriate forum, concluded the report.

The Bombay High Court had postponed Salman Khan's appeal to July 27 as the compilation from Marathi to English is not complete as yet, a report stated. The actor had appealed against his conviction but five of the volumes of the appeal documents contained papers in Marathi and required to be translated. The paper book of the appeal was ready and submitted to court but it contained five volumes which need to be translated into English. The language used in the High Court is English and all documents in any other language, used in lower courts as evidence, must be translated into English.

According to an IANS report, on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, an activist said that the Maharashtra government's Home and Law & Judiciary departments do not have any records pertaining to the Salman Khan accident case of September 28, 2002. A Right To Information query by Mansoor Darvesh has revealed that the files were burnt in the June 21, 2012 devastating fire that engulfed Mantralaya, the state government headquarters in South Mumbai. Quoting the activist, the report stated that the activist had filed the RTI query to the two departments seeking information on the total number of counsels, lawyers, solicitors, legal advisors, public prosecutors, etc. engaged and appointed by the state government to fight the case and he had even asked for the total expenses incurred by the state on the case, from the start in 2002 till the judgement by the Mumbai sessions court on May 6 this year. The report further stated that on the activist's query, the government responded with partial information stating that the documents related to the case were lost in the 2012 fire and "therefore, cannot be made available."

Salman Khan to pay Rs 2 lakh as foreign travel security

A lot has been written about Bollywood actor, Salman Khan being granted permission to travel abroad to UAE for the Indo-Bollywood award function to be held on May 29. However, according to a report, the Bombay High Court has asked the actor to pay a cash security of Rs 2 lakh before flying out to Dubai. The court has allowed him to travel abroad for a performance based on certain conditions, which also included providing details of his travel itinerary and the place where he will stay in Dubai. The report further mentioned that the actor must report his presence at the consulate in Dubai on his arrival there and also prior to his departure. The judge also directed Khan to return his passport to the cops within 12 hours of coming back to Mumbai and also directed him to inform the High Court that he has returned.

The Bombay High Court admitted an appeal filed by actor Salman Khan and observed that the challenge to the conviction for charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder needs serious consideration. While the actor’s case was compared to the Alistair Pereira’s, who mowed down seven persons asleep on a Bandra pavement, experts say culpable homicide law is open to interpretation. According to a report, advocate Majeed Memon was quoted saying that the law needs to be applied only after careful consideration of the facts of each case. He further added that while both the cases were different, death was caused in both.

Salman Khan's bodyguard, constable Ravindra Patil, who had testified in court that the actor was driving the car at the time of 2002 hit-and-run accident, died due to tuberculosis. Now that the verdict is out and Salman has been found guilty of all charges, Patil's mother, Sushilabai said to Mid-day that her son’s soul can now truly rest in peace, as his statement was the key evidence in the case. Quoting Patil's brother, Virendra Patil, the report stated that though Ravindra died of tuberculosis, he was fit and fine till this case occurred. His health went into a downward spiral after the incident and during the case (proceedings). He further added that his mother believed it was Salman Khan and the stress of the case that led to Patil's ill health and, subsequently, his death.

Salman Khan's driver, Ashok Singh, who claimed to have been driving at the time of the 2002 hit-and-run incident, drove the actor to court on Wednesday (May 6, 2015) morning. He stayed back after sessions court held Salman guilty of running over people sleeping on a Bandra pavement 13 years ago, and even drove him back home as he got bail. But there was no trace of the day's dramatic events at Singh's flat in Versova's Mhada colony, suggests a report. When TOI went to Singh's 350 sq ft house, his wife and younger son were not at home. His elder son Shikhar (25), said he was unaware about his parents' whereabouts. When TOI informed him of the verdict, Shikhar said he had just switched on the television. "I don't want to comment on anything. I have just returned from night shift and hardly communicated with my father for the last few days. Besides, we rarely discuss anything about it at home," he said. Earlier, on Monday (May 4, 2015), Singh's wife Anita had said, "My husband hardly speaks about the actor at home. He has been working with the actor since 1989 when he (actor) just entered the film industry. We are from Uttar Pradesh and it was initially a struggle before my husband got the job."

May 6, 7:20 pm: Salman Khan leaves for home after Sessions Court receives bail papers

After all the twists and turns in the 13-year-old hit-and-run case, Salman Khan finally left for his home after Sessions Court received the bail papers. Barely hours after he was sentenced to five years imprisonment, Salman was granted an interim bail of 48 hours on medical grounds by the Bombay High Court. Earlier in the morning, Salman was handed out a five-year jail term by Mumbai Sessions Court after being found guilty of all charges in the case. This news will definitely come as a relief for the star and his family. The actor is expected to reach his home in Bandra anytime soon.

Salman Khan gets interim relief

After a quick turn of events, Salman Khan can now breathe easy for two days. The Bombay High Court has granted him interim relief till May 8 on grounds of not getting the copy of the court order which sentenced him to 5 years in jail.

A detailed hearing will be held on May 8 when Salman will appear in the Bombay High Court. Senior lawyer Harish Salve argued for the superstar on a notice of just 10 minutes as he was present in court for another case. While the court has said that the actor is not required to give any more compensation, the kin of the victim, who died in the hit-and-run case, has said that though he is happy with the verdict, compensation should be given to them.

Salman Khan in tears Salman Khan was shocked after hearing the sentence of 5-year jail term in the 2002 hit-and-run case. He sat down and broke into tears. The actor was taken into custody, and will have to go to the High Court to get bail. The Bombay Court may be shut for a vacation, and Salman may have to wait for a few days for bail. The eyes of Salman’s father, Salim Khan, too turned moist as his daughters stood beside him in tears and shock.

On the other hand, advocate Abha Singh expressed happiness on the sentence and said, “Today's judgment has made it clear that no one is above the law.”

Salman Khan had left the shooting of Bajrangi Bhaijaan midway in Srinagar to attend the court hearing. Since the actor has now been in taken into custody, how director Kabir Khan will handle the situation remains unknown.

The doors of the court room have been shut by the police to control the crowd, as Salman Khan’s fate is to be locked today in the hit-and-run case. The final verdict will be announced at 1:20 pm.

May 6, 12:45 pm: Public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat has closed the argument after asking the judge to give maximum punishment of 10 years to Salman Khan for rash and drunken driving, which killed one. He also added that the quantum of punishment should be based on seriousness of offence, and must not be based on the charity work done by the actor.

The actor is being tried for drunken and rash driving and is accused of ramming his Land Cruiser into a pavement leaving one dead and four injured. The case is on for thirteen years and has kept the actor busy ever since. The actor's lawyers continue to argue that it was Salman’s driver Ashok Singh who was at the wheel, and not Salman.
