Om Puri's last rites: Stars attend to pay final respects

Bollywood lost an important member of its family, an actor who was an institution in himself. Om Puri, 66, breathed his last today morning at his residence. The entire film fraternity got down at his residence to pay condolences to his family and to be present for his last rites.

Anupam Kher, who was among the first few celebrities to rush to Om Puri’s home on the news of his demise, also made it a point to attend the last rites later in the evening. Fondly remembering the actor, Anupam tweeted, “I have known #OmPuri for the last 43yrs. For me he’ll always be a great actor, a kind and generous man. And that is how world should remember him.”

Farhan Akhtar, who had directed Om Puri in films like ‘Don 2’ and ‘Lakshya’, was among the last few to arrive to pay his respects. He also shared a close relationship with the veteran because his father Javed Akhtar had also worked with him during his career spanning over four decades.

Om Puri’s death came as a shock to Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who was eager to work with him in an upcoming project ‘Manto’. The actor who had sent out a heart-felt tweet praising the film legend, also stopped by at the star’s residence to bid him his final farewell.

Randeep Hooda who had taken to Twitter early in the day to pay tribute to Om Puri, was seen attending the last rites. The actor had sent out a tweet that read, “India's 1st true international star, great actor.He rose above his physicality,background&proved himself #RIPOmPuri.” (Photo- IANS)

Thespian Shashi Kapoor was also in attendance. The two acting heavyweights shared screen space in many films, most notably in ‘Kalyug’, ‘Vijeta’ and ‘New Delhi Times’.

Shabana Azmi co-starred with Om Puri in 14 films. The list of Bollywood films where we saw Om Puri and Shabana Azmi together were: ‘Mrityudand’, ‘Muhafiz’, ‘Dharavi’, ‘Antarnaad ‘, ‘Disha’, ‘Susman’, ‘Paar’, ‘Sparsh’, ‘Mandi’, ‘Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai’, ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’, ‘In Custody’, and ‘City of Joy’. They shared a special bond with each other.

The veteran writer was present with wife Shabana. Earlier in the day, Javed Akhtar tweeted his tribute to Om Puri as well. He has written for many films that the passed away actor featured in.

Sudhir Mishra was an assistant director on Om Puri’s ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’. The two went on to work in Sudhir’s National Award winning ‘Dharavi’. The two were actively involved in the art cinema movement of the 80s.

Bollywood's ace comedian, Johnny Lever, also Om Puri's neighbour made his presence felt for the last rites of the actor. He also tweeted about the actors' death and conveyed his condolences to his family. Johnny Lever worked with Om Puri in films like ‘Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge’, ‘Bin Bulaye Baarati’ and many more.

Filmmaker Prakash Jha was seen at Om Puri's residence to pay his last respect to the actor.

Om Puri was currently shooting for Kabir Khan's 'Tubelight' and his sad demise has left Kabir in a shock. He expressed his sadness on Twitter. He was also seen at Om Puri's residence to see him for the last time.

The 'Madaari' actor, Irrfan Khan and Om Puri have worked together in only three movies, namely 'Billu', 'Maqbool' and 'Such A Long Journey'. But the actor made sure that he dropped in to say a final good bye to his co-star.

TV and film actor Anang Desai was present at Om Puri’s funeral too. Desai and Om Puri shared screen space in many films, most remarkably, Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’, ‘Shararat’, and ‘Tarpan’.

Om Puri and Tinu Anand have worked together in 12 movies. The most popular collaborations of Om Puri and Tinu Anand are 'Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya', 'Dabangg', 'Baabarr', 'China Gate' and 'Ghatak'. Tinu Anand visited Om Puri's residence to pay his condolences to the Puri family.
