#NirbhayaInsulted: Bollywood reacts

According to a report on IANS, after veteran writer-lyricist, Javed Akhtar, voiced his opinion in favour of 'India's Daughter,' his son Farhan Akhtar has come forward to support the controversial documentary saying that filmmaker Leslee Udwin's intent is not to defame India. The documentary on the Delhi gang rape has triggered an uproar as it features the interview of Mukesh Singh, one of the six rapists of the 23-year-old medical student. Farhan watched the documentary 'India's Daughter' at its premiere in the US. "Watched #IndiasDaughter last night at the U.S. premiere in NYC. Raises some serious questions about the concept of masculinity...The filmmaker's intent is clear. It is not to defame India but use an event that reverberated around the globe as the basis for her study..." Farhan posted on Twitter. The actor-filmmaker, who himself launched a social campaign MARD (Man Against Racial Discrimination) in 2013 to promote gender equality and women empowerment, added, "The director's focus on the aftermath i.e public outrage/protests/amendment of law speaks volumes of our vibrant democracy."

#NirbhayaInsulted: Bollywood reacts

In an interview with Times Now, actress turned MP Jaya Bachchan reacted to a controversial documentary which had an interview of Nirbhaya's rape accused. Speaking about the same she said, "It was insensitive, it was commercial. It was not a social issue. How are you making this guy into some kind of a celebrity. He was like a celebrity, suddenly everyone is discussing him. She (reporter) got what she wanted, she got the eyeballs. I feel very hurt, violated, insulted. " While the documentary is mired in controversy with some people wanting it to be banned, Jaya Bachchan expressed that she would never want to watch it. "I do not wish to see it, I do not wish to feel more tortured, more humiliated and spend sleepless nights," she said.

According to an IANS report, national award-winning director Hansal Mehta is appalled by the ban on the documentary based on the December 16, 2012 Delhi gang-rape. He said that it's difficult for him to comprehend the government's order and questions why the government is restricting cinema from reflecting the truth in society, the report stated. "My only reaction is that the government needs to be banned. Cinema is a mirror to us and we are living in a country that has abetted this atrocity that is disgusting enough. And then we have a government that doesn't even want us to see the mirror," Mehta told IANS.

The documentary India's Daughter by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin has kicked up a storm over the interview of one of the six men who raped the 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist on December 16, 2012 in a moving bus in Delhi. She later died in a Singapore hospital where she had been airlifted for specialised treatment.

The controversial documentary was uploaded on video sharing website YouTube by an individual, but was later pulled down. "I have not gone to work after watching it. I am actually very upset and depressed after watching it. YouTube has become the only democratic place left and government is going to clamp down on it soon. I was told it was already taken down," Hansal told IANS.

#NirbhayaInsulted: Bollywood reacts

The interview of one of the convicts in Nirbhaya's gang rape and murder case, for a documentary by a British filmmaker, has turned into a huge controversy. The Delhi Police have registered a case under Section 509 (outraging the modesty of women) and Section 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of trust) of the Indian Penal code. What's even more shocking is the fact that the rapist, Mukesh Singh, has blamed the victim for the incident. As soon as a short excerpt from the interview was released, #NirbhayaInsulted started trending on Twitter.
