Director David Dhawan’s ‘Judwaa’ had a few firsts. It was the first time that one of the three Khans, Salman Khan on this occasion, played a double role. Plus, before this film, although Dhawan had made a number of comedies, it was only with this film that he tried his hand at something completely mindless. And the result turned out to be favorable. The film highly succeeded in tickling the audience’s funny bone while Salman too was praised for playing two starkly different characters with ease.

Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Duplicate’ was Shah Rukh Khan’s first attempt at a double role. He played two characters that were poles apart – the fearful and innocent Bablu Chaudhry and the bindaas ruffian, Manu Dada. Its song ‘Ek shararat hone ko hai’ became a rage and, in fact, is still remembered. Unfortunately, this was the only thing that worked in the film since it turned out to be a flop. This was Bhatt’s second outing with the King Khan. The first one, ‘Chaahat’ too didn’t work.

Aamir Khan took almost 30 years, after he made his film debut, to star in a double role in Vijay Krishna Acharya’s ‘Dhoom 3’. The wait turned out to be worth for the producers, Yash Raj Films, as the film turned out to be one of the biggest blockbusters ever. Although ‘Dhoom 3’ received its share of negative comments from audience and critics, Aamir’s act as a cunning thief and his autistic twin brother was well appreciated. The film also had some Hollywood-like exciting stunt sequences.

Double role isn’t a novel idea in Bollywood by any means. But hardly few could have expected a Sooraj Barjatya movie to feature this concept and that too in his most favorite genre – family dramas. The Rajshri film focused on a dramatic tale featuring lookalikes but at the same time, kept their usual family values intact. But the risk paid high dividends and ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ broke quite a few box office records. The film also went on to be one of Salman’s biggest hits.
