Speaking about the film, he reportedly said that the film is about two warring brothers and it is based on facts. He also added that it is like the ‘K3G’ (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...) of the Mughal era but it would be more extreme as there is more betrayal. The film apparently has troupes of court politics and is also rich in its texture.
Also elaborating on his ensemble cast, he reportedly revealed that it is an unusual mix of talents and that each actor fit to the character to the tee.
With Ranveer being the lead, comparisons with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period films are bound to happen. To this, the director added that although the comparison scares him, he hopes to find his own voice and not doomed by comparison.
Here's what Karan Johar said on 'Takht' being compared to Sanjay Leela Bhansali movies

‘Takht’ is reportedly set in the Mughal era and will have Ranveer and Vicky playing brothers and Kareena will be seen as their sister. The film will go on floors soon and will hit the screens in the year 2020. During an interaction with an entertainment portal, when Karan Johar was asked about the ensemble cast, he stated, that it’s an unusual mix of talent with actors who have walked the parallel path. He spoke in depth about each actor and said that the movie has the superstar dynamic with Kareena (Kapoor), there’s Anil Kapoor whom he has never directed before – but each actor fits the part to the T. KJo further emphasizes that he did not cast them or go to them because he has access, but it’s a strange dichotomy as each one has never played a part like this and yet each one fits it perfectly.
Since Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known to create extraordinary period dramas, ‘Takht’ too was being compared to Bhansali’s works. When questioned about this comparison, KJo said that he loves Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s aesthetic and would be lying if he didn’t admit that the comparison is very challenging. He also admitted that the comparison scares him but he hopes to find his own voice and not get doomed by comparison. Karan also added that he is just recovering from ‘Sairat’ and doesn’t wish to there again.
He concluded by saying, that he has set the bar rather high and if he pays homage to his work then he will surely be proud of it. More than the comparison, KJo is afraid of not living up to the potential of the narrative and just hopes he can do justice to the material.

The details of those characters aren’t out yet but there will be one senior actor playing Shah Jahan. Excited much?

While nothing has been set in stone as yet, the makers believe that Saif would make an interesting choice to play Udaybhan Rathod, a Rajput officer appointed by Jai Singh, chief of Aurangzeb’s Moghul army.
Will fans get to see Saif and Ajay sharing screen-space for the fourth time in this film based on the Battle of Sinhagad? Only time will tell.
Meanwhile, over the year, numerous reports have hinted at the periodic-drama being released in a 3D format, while another claimed that Ajay is keen on bringing wife, Kajol on-board to play the female lead.
With pre-production work on in full swing, director Om Raut is expected to start filming 'Taanaji: The Unsung Warrior' in the next few months.
Kajol to star opposite Ajay Devgn in 'Taanaji: The Unsung Warrior'?
Ajay Devgn's aspiring historical project, 'Taanaji: The Unsung Warrior' has already raised the excitement within the audience since the makers revealed its first poster last year. The fiery poster of the film looked impressive and convincing as it showed Ajay in the Maratha gear, defending himself from blazing arrows on the battlefield.
The film is undergoing its pre-production work and the makers are yet to lock the final casting of the film. If reports are to be believed, Ajay Devgn's wife and actress Kajol is expected to come on boards to play Taanaji's better half. Though the film focuses on the heroic fight of Taanaji Malusare in the Battle of Sinhagad, it also puts light on his personal life.
Initially there were talks that Ajay wanted to rope in Kajol to play Taanaji's wife and it seems its time for Ajay and Kajol to share the screen space after years.
The movie will be made with a high budget of Rs. 150 Crore and is expected to go on floors by September this year.
Meanwhile, Kajol is gearing up for the release of her film, Helicopter Eela, which is produced by Ajay Devgn and is slated to release on September 14, 2018.
