His movies called Robin Hood: Bodhisattva, an unlikely combination of an English legend and a religion that originated in India. Hes both filmmaker and actor for this one, and describes himself as the most multifaceted filmmaker of his generation on his website, because, like Satyajit Ray and Robert Rodriguez, he can perform each aspect of production himself and in addition play the lead.
Be that as it may, Canada-based Indian-origin filmmaker Zen Duke is making this unlikely movie, and dedicating it to the victims of the Mumbai terror attack. A lot of the movie relates to the victims of the terror attack in Mumbai, actually. Its the first Robin Hood movie adapted for an increasingly global audience, which has never happened before. And the tragedy in Mumbai was a global tragedy. This film has been shot all over the world in countries like America, England, Canada, Japan, Singapore and even in India. We shot in Delhi and Kolkata, among other places. The new Robin Hood should address a global tragedy. Another aspect I feel that India today has a very strong international image. Indians like M Night Shyamalan, Anil Ambani and others have made great inroads into Hollywood, he explains.
He also says that the movie has a very strong Indian connection that goes beyond just his Indian roots. This is first time ever that an Indian-origin actor is playing a global action hero in a mainstream movie like Robin Hood. Its my debut film and Im playing the lead. Its most ambitious, but it was extremely important to show that an Indian-origin actor can beat up the bad guys, rescue the girls and be the hero in an international movie. The international image of India is extremely important. Then, theres the concept of a Buddhist superhero.
Buddhism and the concept of Bodhisattva come from India. The people who died during the terror attack were real life Bodhisattvas. They sacrificed their own happiness to save others, which is the mark of a Bodhisattva. And that is what the movie is all about how Robin Hood follows the Bodhisattvas dharma. It makes perfect sense for me to dedicate this movie to all those who suffered due to the terror attack. I have put the name of every single hero who died in the Mumbai attack, in the closing credits, he says.
Zen says that Indians have changed the way the world sees them. As Shekhar Kapur once rightly said, Spider-Man will take off his mask and we will see an Indian face. This is pretty much the same. Instead of Spider-Man, the hero is Robin Hood. Indian billionaires should invest in Indian talent and promote Indian culture. Now, top Hollywood stars are paid by Indians as well. So the same people can invest in Indian-origin artistes too, he says.
Hes quite familiar with India, having visited it many times. I have been associated with a lot of social activities in India. I have lived all over the world, but Im of Indian origin and very proud of my heritage. My parents are Indian, but I was born in Canada. But I want to be called an Indian, who wants to represent India as an international community, he says.
