You won’t believe who almost played the legendary roles in these iconic films

Shah Rukh Khan’s portrayal of Raj Malhotra in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is etched in every Bollywood lover’s heart, but he wasn't the first choice. Aditya Chopra initially approached Saif Ali Khan, who declined the role. Aamir Khan and Salman Khan were also considered before it finally landed in SRK’s lap. Ironically, Shah Rukh himself was hesitant about doing a romantic film at that stage in his career. Thankfully, he took the leap, and DDLJ went on to become one of the longest-running films in Indian cinema, redefining the romance genre entirely.

In Kal Ho Naa Ho, Shah Rukh Khan once again won hearts as the selfless and terminally ill Aman Mathur, but did you know the role was initially written for Salman Khan? Karan Johar reportedly had Salman in mind, but due to creative differences and perhaps Salman’s hesitation to take on such an emotional role, the script found its way to SRK. His performance added just the right mix of humour, charm, and heartbreak that made the film a modern classic.

Aamir Khan’s Lagaan is not only a cult favourite but also an Oscar-nominated gem. Yet, the film was first offered to Shah Rukh Khan. Director Ashutosh Gowariker had envisioned SRK as Bhuvan, the brave villager who leads a cricket team against the British. However, things didn’t materialize with SRK, and Aamir stepped in—not just as the lead actor, but also as producer. His commitment to the project, including months of training and rural shooting, turned Lagaan into a historical milestone in Indian cinema.

Salman Khan’s portrayal of Pavan in Bajrangi Bhaijaan was warm, earnest, and career-defining—but Aamir Khan was actually the first to hear the script. Writer KV Vijayendra Prasad reportedly pitched the story to Aamir, who appreciated it but didn’t take it forward. When Salman came on board, he not only brought his star power but also a certain innocence to the character that resonated with audiences across the board, making it one of the most beloved performances of his career.

Hrithik Roshan became an overnight sensation with Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, but he almost didn’t star in the film. Rakesh Roshan had reportedly approached Bobby Deol for the lead role first. However, Bobby couldn’t commit due to date issues, which led Rakesh to launch his son Hrithik instead. The rest, as they say, is history. Hrithik’s dual role, dancing skills, and screen presence created hysteria and marked one of the most iconic debuts in Bollywood history.

In Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Hrithik Roshan played the uptight and career-driven Arjun, but this role was reportedly offered to Shah Rukh Khan first. Zoya Akhtar had considered SRK for the role, but due to date issues or perhaps creative priorities, it didn’t work out. Hrithik brought a perfect blend of intensity and vulnerability to the character, making it a memorable part of this coming-of-age road film.

And finally, no list would be complete without Sholay, where Amjad Khan’s portrayal of Gabbar Singh became iconic. But did you know that Danny Denzongpa was the original choice? Danny had to back out due to prior commitments, which led Ramesh Sippy to cast a relatively unknown Amjad Khan. Initially doubted for the role, Amjad silenced everyone with his chilling dialogue delivery and unforgettable presence. It’s now impossible to think of Gabbar without picturing his menacing glare and haunting voice.
