It’s American Pie without the pie. This is how director Hansal Mehta describes his ‘‘coming of age’’ film Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai, which is increasingly being referred to as a sex comedy.
‘‘But Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai is not a sex comedy. In fact, there is no sex in the film,’’ maintains Mehta, ‘‘The film tells the story of a bunch of guys who are on the lookout for an experience which will see them graduate from boys to men.
The film does not belong to the genre of sex comedy but to the ‘coming of age’ genre, which is so popular in the West.’’
A software engineer by profession before he was bitten by the movie bug, Mehta has directed Chhal and Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar in the past. But none of his movies has probably attracted so much attention as Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai. ‘‘How can the movie be a copy of American Pie? The teen scenario in America and India is diametrically different. What is common to Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai and American Pie is the central theme —boys coming of age,’’ offers Mehta.
Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai tells the tale of four friends who are in the last year of their college —a year when they all realise the importance of woman in their lives. The film opens up when these four friends are refused entry to a club because they are single. This triggers off their efforts to pursue girls. In the course of this attempt, these boys do become men and find girls of their choice — but with a slight twist. Because the girls they love are not the ones they lust for.
The film stars eight newcomers — Punar Nava, Yash Raj, Deepti, Prashant, Samita, Amar Ali, Payal and Vaibhav —and is produced by Harry Baweja, who is known for having made commercial potboilers such as Trinetra, Dilwale, Diljale, Imtehaan and Deewane.
Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai releases on October 11. And when it does, atleast one question will finally be put to rest. After all, you can’t have your American Pie and eat it too, right?
