Women Directors Shaping Bollywood

Few women filmmakers have made a mark and that too substantial enough in this male-dominated industry while significant voices are challenging the powerful masculine regime. They have taken forward social norms with their films, which serve as a mixed bag of entertainment with fresh new perspectives. All these are an important way through which the viewer can dig deeper into the nature of Indian culture. Here's a look at five women directors who have given Hindi cinema some unforgettable gems.

2/6

Zoya Akhtar

In a nutshell, Zoya Akhtar is known for her nuanced, finely done stories of character-driven narratives. It began with her debut directorial venture, Luck by Chance, in 2009, which was more or less an extended peek into the underbelly of the Hindi film industry. But it was Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara in 2011 that really brought her into the forefront of Bollywood. Life is to be lived tells a coming-of-age road trip saga, which was destined to strike a chord with the viewers for its inspiring theme of friendship—enlightening, liberating, living. Gully Boy (2019), based on the lives of slum rappers in Mumbai, showcased Akhtar's potential in terms of a varied storyline and went on to bag several awards and became India's entry into the Oscars.

3/6

Meghna Gulzar

Meghna Gulzar is the daughter of legendary lyricist Gulzar, and she has an innate feel for intense and engrossing stories. Her movie Talvar, released in 2015 and based on the controversial Noida double murder case, was appreciated as a balanced and unbiased storyline. She went on with Raazi in 2018—a spy thriller set during the 1971 Indo-Pak war—which was not just acclaimed because of its strong performances and gripping storyline. Meghna is a filmmaker characterized by the profoundly emotional content of her works and focuses on human experiences and ethical dilemmas.

4/6

Gauri Shinde

Gauri Shinde made a memorable debut with English Vinglish in 2012—an endearing story of a housewife who gets a boost of confidence by learning English. It was critically acclaimed, and at the same time, commercially viable, reaching out to audiences all around. Cut to 2016, and her next venture was Dear Zindagi starring Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan; the film was very sensitively handled with core issues on mental health. Her films are usually about self-discovery and personal growth, which really strikes a chord within viewers.

5/6

Farah Khan

Farah Khan brought a breath of fresh air into masala entertainment in Bollywood through her directorial debut, Main Hoon Na, in 2004, which had just the perfect amounts of the ingeniously impasted action, romance, and comedy. And then followed the movie in 2007—Om Shanti Om, paying a grand homage to the golden era of Bollywood, featuring in the lists of highest grosser movies of that time. Known for her flamboyant narratives, Farah's films are colorful in every way, with catchy music and interesting stories.

6/6

Reema Kagti

Reema Kagti has been one director who has consistently delivered engaging and thought-provoking cinema. Her debut film Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. (2007) was a quirky take on the journey of six couples. However, it was Talaash (2012), a psychological thriller starring Aamir Khan, which presented her with a masterstroke in creating atmospheric tension and layered storytelling. Kagti is also famous for the co-writing of Gully Boy and directing Gold in 2018, a sports drama based on India's first Olympic medal post-independence. The dual work showcased her versatility and pure ability to handle genres that are totally different from each other.
