The honeymoon between Nagesh Kukunoor and filmmaker Shailendra Singh appears to have gone sour. If you remember, Nagesh and Shailendra had signed a three-film deal that saw the two make the Akshay Kumar starrer Tasveer 8x10 — a box office dud,
John Abraham’s Aashayein (hardly anyone went to see it) and the Sameera Reddy starrer Yeh Hausla that hasn’t released yet.
The flashpoint is said to have come when Aashayein wasn’t released for a couple of years as first recession set in, then Shailendra saw a big gaping hole in his pockets as Tasveer and then Jumbo — two of his company’s biggest commercial projects, tanked at the cash counters.
Trade gossip has it that Nagesh felt that Aashayein was not marketed well.
While Nagesh is trying to convince Shailendra’s company how not to repeat the same blunder in promoting Yeh Hausla, which the industry says has his old masterful touch, Shailendra does not appear ready to release the movie. A frustrated Nagesh is believed to have called in other filmmakers to buy the rights of the film and release it. But Shailendra is said to have quoted an inflated price that drove them away.
Nagesh refused to comment, but Shailendra diplomatically told TOI, “Nagesh is a dear friend and we have enjoyed every experience of working with him. Yeh Hausla deals with drama and relationships and could be termed as a chic flick, it needs very aggressive marketing and an appropriate time for release. But 2010, having 200 flops, hasn’t helped us plan and schedule the release yet. These are interestingly tough times for Bollywood. We need to very tactfully release our products.”
