Whoever gets lucky, clicks: Kailash

...is what Kailash Kher has to say about lines being blurred between singing, acting and composing in Bollywood.
Whoever gets lucky, clicks: Kailash

And just as listeners get immediately hooked on to his music, it's equally easy to love this down-to-earth guy, perhaps its because the glamour n glitz of tinseltown hasnt yet tarnished this Meerut guy's simplicity.
Ever accommodating, Kailash happily obliges our lensman with poses perched on the balustrade, hunched up on the ground with his arms outstretched...

all with his trademark winning smile. And despite back-to-back auditions for the talent hunt show he is in Lucknow for, Kailash happily agrees to speak to us on his passion for music.
So, what makes all his songs appeal to his fans, we begin? I'm a seedha-saada guy from a small place and this quality of mine will always be reflected in my songs. And people identify themselves with it. Then again, my songs are about love and since it's a universal emotion everybody connects with them.
For a man once derided by critics as being untrained and unfit for singing, Kailash has reached his pinnacle now, with songs being specially composed for him. AR Rehman calls him a fragrance of rural Indian soil, while mister perfectionist Aamir Khan hugged and complimented him by saying that his voice alone is music for the ears.
It feels good to be appreciated. My songs are my passion and reflect my feelings. When people understand and like my music, I feel theyre praising my personality.
And this passion of his is not just limited to singing. Kailash has also written the lyrics of both his albums Kailasa and Jhoomo Re, and also composed music for them. So what does he think of music directors like Himesh Reshammiya and Vishal-Shekhar making a foray into singing? Kailash shrugs: So what? I too write and compose, but that doesnt mean lyricists and composers should feel threatened. Everybody is out to prove themselves any which way. Whoever gets lucky, clicks.

Kailashs songs touch an emotional chord, and this quality he attributes to his experiences in life. My songs are a reflection of my experiences. I have undergone all these emotions of love, hunger, disappointment, frustration, happiness and success. So when I sing about them I put all my feelings into the words and my music.
That his songs need to have that personal touch is reiterated when Kailash goes on: I also sing in Tamil and Telugu, but since I don't understand the languages I can't put feelings in them and at least to me they sound impersonal.
This winner of several awards is known for his charity work. In fact, he regularly performs at charitable shows.
Apart from an album-in-the-making, Kailash is also composing music for films like Hirdesh Kambles Pranali, and Chandni Chowk To China.
