India-Pakistan tensions have often spilled into the cricketing arena, influencing bilateral ties and tournament dynamics. Yet, there have also been moments of mutual admiration between personalities from both nations. One such instance involved former Pakistan captain
Wasim Akram and Bollywood superstar
Shah Rukh Khan, known for films like ‘Chennai Express’, who co-owns the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Akram served as the team’s bowling coach for several seasons and worked closely with the actor-entrepreneur.
The travel concern before a crucial match
Recalling a memorable episode from the 2012 IPL playoffs, Akram shared how the team faced an exhausting travel schedule ahead of a knockout fixture in Kolkata. Concerned that the long journey would leave the players fatigued before an important game, he approached Shah Rukh Khan with a request for alternative arrangements.
According to The Indian Express, in an interview, Akram described the exchange in detail, “I think this happened during the 2012 IPL season. Our knockout match was in Kolkata, and I remember we were going to arrive via some place. Shah Rukh Khan was there.
So I asked him, ‘Khan saab, ek request hai (Mr Khan, I have a request).’ I said, ‘Ladke bade thak jayenge, hum kal pahunchenge, parso match hai. Toh agar ek private plane (The team will get extremely tired. We’ll reach tomorrow, and the match is the day after. If a private plane could be arranged)…’ He replied, ‘Thak jayenge ladke? Koi problem nahi (They’ll get tired you say? No problem).’ Within one hour, pura Boeing jahaaz khada tha for the whole team.”
