When Nargis revealed Dharmendra’s connection to Meena Kumari’s tragic end, 'Maut Mubarak Ho Meena'
Meena Kumari’s life remains one of the most heartbreaking chapters in Bollywood’s history. Known as the Tragedy Queen, she died at just 38, after years of emotional turmoil, loneliness, and alcohol addiction. Her passing left the industry devastated. Reports from the time stated that her family couldn’t even afford the hospital bill of Rs 3,500 — the attending doctor paid the amount so they could take her body home.
But perhaps the most haunting recollection of her decline is the open letter written by her contemporary and close friend Nargis, who mourned Meena’s death while shedding light on the emotional wounds that slowly consumed the ‘Pakeezah’ star.
In the letter, she wrote, “Maut Mubarak Ho Meena. Meena, today your baaji congratulates you on your death and asks you to never step into this world again. This place is not meant for people like you.”

A widely discussed incident involving a slap pushed Meena to leave Amrohi’s home. The emotional shock, combined with her loneliness, drove her deeper into alcohol. Eventually, she had to be hospitalized as her condition worsened.
Nargis later wrote that she tried to pull Meena out of her addiction but was unable to reach her in time.
But their bond ended abruptly after a misunderstanding. Dharmendra walked away, leaving Meena emotionally shattered. According to Nargis, “Slowly, she began to inch towards death.” Her heartbreak, combined with her already fragile emotional state, accelerated her decline into addiction.
And now, Dharmendra too is gone. He passed away on November 24, 2025, at the age of 89 after a prolonged illness.
