When Janhvi Kapoor spoke about the loss of her mother, Sridevi, and said, “Khushi stopped crying just to comfort me”

The untimely passing of legendary actress Sridevi in February 2018 sent shockwaves across the nation. At just 54, her sudden death left an irreplaceable void in Indian cinema—and a deeper personal tragedy for her daughters, Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor. Years later, the pain remains etched in their memories.


In an older episode of Koffee with Karan, Janhvi Kapoor opened up about the devastating moment she received the news of her mother's demise. “When I got the call, I was in my room, and I could hear wailing from Khushi’s room. I think I barged into her room howling and crying,” Janhvi shared.


But what happened next was something she says she will never forget—Khushi, though devastated, stopped crying immediately upon seeing her elder sister in distress. “She looked at me, and the minute she looked at me, she just stopped crying. She sat next to me and started comforting me. And I have never seen her cry about it since.”


Khushi’s Silent Strength
Khushi, who was only 17 at the time, revealed that she felt a strong sense of responsibility to hold herself together. “I think I felt like I had to hold it together for everyone because I have always been the strong one,” she said. Despite her age, her emotional composure helped her family through the tragedy, even if it meant bottling up her own grief.


Grieving Behind Closed Doors
The sisters admitted that though they deeply feel the loss, they rarely show their emotions to one another. “We get emotional about things but don’t show it. I think it took me a while to accept her new reality,” Khushi added.


From Daughters to Each Other’s Pillars
Janhvi reflected on how the loss reshaped their relationship. “The dynamics have changed so much. She is equally my baby and my mom at times. And I am equally her baby and her mom at times.” In Sridevi’s absence, Janhvi and Khushi have become each other’s greatest support system, grieving, healing, and growing together.


On the work front, Janhvi was last seen in the Telugu film ‘Devara’, and Khushi Kapoor’s previous outing was ‘Nadanniyaan’.
