When 'Dhurandhar' actor Akshaye Khanna questioned society’s silence on honour killings: 'We've become very thick-skinned'

Akshaye Khanna is receiving wide praise for his intense and quiet performance in 'Dhurandhar'. Akshaye Khanna questioned society's silence on such matters.

Calling out society’s silence

In the interview with Lehren, Akshaye shared his honest thoughts about how people react to suffering around them. He said that society has become “thick-skinned.” According to him, even big tragedies like hunger, violence, and corruption often fail to move people deeply. He said, "We see a beggar on the street who hasn't eaten in two days. It really doesn't affect us to the extent, say, someone who comes from abroad, it would affect them much more."


Akshaye further said that even a 100 CRPF men gets killed by Naxals, it wouldn't affect the general public due to the reason that, "It doesn't affect us the way it should affect us. Today, we know of a politician who's, you know, robbed the country of two thousand, three thousand crores. You know, you know what I'm saying, we've become very thick-skinned as a society." He added that there is a census that says that almost two to three thousand people are killed every year because of honour killings, caste issues and other issues. He highlights, "You know, it doesn't impact us, so we don't really care about it as much as we should."

Why Aakrosh mattered to him

Akshaye explained that Aakrosh was not just another film for him. He said working on the movie made him more aware of what happens daily in the country. The film, which focused on honour killings and injustice, aimed to wake people up and make them care. For Akshaye, Aakrosh stood apart because it tried to show harsh truth instead of comfort. He concluded, "Hopefully everyone who watches the film, make them a little more aware of the ground realities in our country, what is happening every day, and that we need to care, you know, about these things more. And I think that's really the difference that Aakrosh has been for me, as opposed to, you know, other normal movies that you do."
