When Dharmendra played Superman's dad in THIS movie

When you hear Superman, who is the first actor that comes to your mind: David Corenswet, Henry Cavill, or Christopher Reeve? Well, when it comes to Indian cinema, the first actor who comes to mind is Dharmendra. Interestingly, in the 1987 movie ‘Superman,’ a remake of the Hollywood movie of the same title, Dharmendra played a pivotal role. However, before you jump the gun, he didn’t play Superman in the movie; he played the role of Superman’s father!

After Superman became all the rage in comics and Hollywood, Indian filmmaker B.Gupta took the challenge to create the same magic for the Bollywood audience. In his 1987 released movie, Puneet Issar, who is popularly known for his character of Duryodhana in B.R. Chopra's Mahabharata, played the role of Superman.


Meanwhile, Dharmendra, or as the Indian cinema lovers call him, the ‘He-man’ of Bollywood, portrayed the role of Superman's biological father (based on Jor-El). Further, Ashok Kumar essayed the character of Superman's foster father (based on Jonathan Kent).

According to Jagran, the role that Dharmendra played was first offered to Dara Singh. Reportedly, Dara Singh did shoot a few scenes but then had to back out of the project. Eventually, the role landed in the hands of Dharmendra.

Though the movie didn’t turn out to be successful, Dharmendra garnered a lot of acclaim for his work. To date, in his fan circle, Dharmendra is called the dad of Superman.

Dharmendra’s health update: Actor placed on ventilator support

Legendary and veteran actor Dharmendra has been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. The actor has been placed on a ventilator support in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for close observation, confirmed a source. Worried fans have expressed concern and are praying for his speedy recovery.
