When Big B said NO to THIS film, Vinod Khanna became superstar; Rajinikanth later led the Tamil remake

Every Bollywood star, even a legend, carries at least one lingering regret, a film that slipped away despite genuine interest. Amitabh Bachchan had his own what-if moment with ‘Qurbani’, the 1980 hit he was eager to do but ultimately had to let go, a decision that unexpectedly reshaped careers and cinematic history. His absence opened the door for Vinod Khanna, who stepped into the role and rode the film’s success back to the very top.

According to MexXP, Amitabh Bachchan is no exception to this rule, and even he has that one movie he certainly wished he was a part of. That lingering sense of loss is tied to ‘Qurbani’, the blockbuster he reportedly wanted to sign but could not accommodate due to scheduling constraints. The report suggests it remained a genuine pivotal miss for Bachchan, not because his stardom needed another triumph, but because the film grew into a cultural moment, driven by roaring box office numbers, a wildly popular soundtrack, and a role that helped redefine Vinod Khanna’s screen persona.

Why Amitabh Bachchan stepped aside

The part Bachchan could not take went to none other than the one man who could challenge Big B on the big screen. Yes, it was Vinod Khanna. Long before ‘Qurbani’, the two had already shared screen space in films such as ‘Reshma Aur Shera’, ‘Hera Pheri’, ‘Parvarish’ and ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, making the eventual casting switch all the more compelling in retrospect.

So why did Bachchan miss out? According to previous reports, director-actor Feroz Khan wanted Big B for the role, and Big B too was keen to do it. But timing proved unforgiving. Due to a lack of dates, Big B asked Feroz to wait for six months, but the filmmaker could not afford the delay. With production unable to stall, Bachchan stepped aside, and Vinod Khanna took his place.

What followed was nothing short of transformative. The movie jump-started his career once again. The star became a superstar. The material also claims ‘Qurbani’ was made on a budget of Rs. 2.5 crore and earned Rs. 25 crore at the box office, adding, Now that is an amazing profit.

Beyond its leading men, the film boasted a stellar cast including Zeenat Aman, Amjad Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Amrish Puri, Kader Khan and Aruna Irani. Its music, too, became part of popular culture, with songs that continue to enjoy a cult following.

How the film lived on in Tamil

The story adds that ‘Qurbani’ drew inspiration from the 1972 Italian-West German movie ‘The Master Touch’. Its legacy stretched further in 1986, when it was remade in Tamil as ‘Viduthalai’. In the remake, Rajinikanth stepped into Feroz Khan’s role, while Dr Vishnuvardhan played the character originally portrayed by Vinod Khanna, though the film went on to receive only an average response.
