Her silent battles

Disclaimer: This article contains mention of cancer and personal experiences related to the disease, which readers may find sensitive. Aruna Irani hid her breast cancer diagnosis from the public until she revealed that her battle with the disease started in 2015. She noticed something was off during filming so she asked for a medical evaluation right away. The medical staff described the lump as minor but she decided to have it removed anyway. She chose to take medication instead of chemotherapy because she wanted to escape its severe side effects. Looking back today, she calls that decision her biggest mistake.

Working through pain and recovery

Just four days after surgery, the veteran actress returned to set, determined not to let illness disrupt her work. As stated by The Indian Express, she recalled how chemotherapy in those days caused severe side effects like darkened skin and hair loss, which pushed her to opt for daily medication instead. For nearly five years, she continued this treatment quietly. While she appeared “hale and hearty” on the outside, she was fighting a private war within. Her resilience kept her career active even during this phase.

Cancer returns in 2020

The medical staff found a new lump during Aruna's 2020 checkup in the exact position where her previous lump appeared despite her ongoing medical visits. The choice to avoid chemotherapy during her first diagnosis likely resulted in this outcome according to Aruna's understanding. Doctors performed an emergency operation on her before they started her chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The treatment started at the same moment the Covid-19 pandemic emerged which created additional obstacles for her. The process demanded her to show both courage and endurance to fight against her initial doubt and fear.

Surviving diabetes, kidney failure and cancer-twice

Even though she was diagnosed with cancer, it wasn’t her only battle with health issues. She was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 60 years old and after her doctors told her that she had experienced kidney failure, she felt terror. She fought through each health battle, emerging from them a stronger person. The multiple bouts of poor health strengthened her resolve to see her doctor for regular health screenings. Now, she uses her story as an educational tool to help others gain an awareness of the importance of being screened for potential health issues. Her story is excellent evidence of the value of being resilient, hardworking, and persistent when facing adversity.
