When Amitabh Bachchan's prank made Shakti Kapoor CRY on the sets of 'Satte Pe Satta' - Throwback
Shakti Kapoor narrated a story about Amitabh Bachchan and his fellow actors from the movie 'Satte Pe Satta pulling a prank on him during the filming of the song "Dukki Pe Dukki Ho."
Shakti Kapoor, well-known for playing both villainous and comedic roles in 1980s and 1990s films, previously talked about a funny incident from when he was shooting the movie 'Satte Pe Satta' in 1982. Speaking to Digital Commentary, Shakti said that back in his heyday in Bollywood, he was very protective and particular about his scenes and lines in movies. However, Amitabh Bachchan and some other actors decided to play a prank on him because of his attitude during the filming of 'Satte Pe Satta'.
Feeling a little unsure while filming with seven other actors, Shakti Kapoor turned to director Raj N. Sippy for comfort. The director reassured him by saying he was just as talented as Amitabh Bachchan. Shakti also remembered how he made his character stand out by speaking with a stutter in his lines.
Recalling the prank played by Amitabh Bachchan and his fellow actors, Shakti said, “We were filming the song “Dukki Pe Dukki Ho.” My second line was in the song. While I was waiting for my cue, I saw Amitabh Bachchan saying my line instead. I thought, ‘Amitabh is saying my dialogue. My career is over.’ I thought he was a star; he can do anything. He took my dialogue. I went to the director and said, ‘This is not fair’. All six actors were sitting behind the bush, and they saw me crying, started clapping, and said, ‘Saale mazak kia hai. (We are joking with you.) The camera wasn’t rolling.’ They thought Shakti Kapoor was so serious about my lines and scenes. Then Amitabh Bachchan asked the director to give me a few extra shots, saying, ‘Nahi toh mar jaega yeh.’ (He will die otherwise.)”
'Satte Pe Satta' is a popular Indian movie from 1982. It's a mix of action and comedy, directed by Raj N. Sippy and produced by Romu N. Sippy. The main stars include Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, and Amjad Khan. The story is about seven brothers who are a bit rough around the edges. Their lives change when Indu (played by Hema Malini), the wife of the oldest brother Ravi Anand (played by Amitabh Bachchan), enters their lives and tries to make them more civilized. Things get complicated when a man who looks just like Ravi, named Babu, is sent to kill Seema Singh, a wealthy woman in a wheelchair, by her cunning uncle Ranjit Singh (played by Amjad Khan). The movie is based on the plot of the American film "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" from 1954 and is considered a classic in Indian cinema.
