Where the world is plagued by stress, actor Rahul Bose, one of Mumbai’s three Lead India finalists, doesn’t have any.
“Nothing causes me stress. Certainly not cinema or my social work, definitely not rugby or spending time with my sister or niece. I am not crazy about money and sleep without a fan or AC 365 days a year,” says the actor. Rahul has always been a crusader be it travelling with Medha Patkar or supporting the cause of the girl child. He was earlier socially aware but became socially conscious during the 1992-93 riots and after the Gujarat riots.
“I am happy that my social work affects my personal life in the most wonderful ways. It makes me get up in the morning every day thinking how lucky I am. But, of course, my friends and family have a different view of my life. My sister is amazed that someone so short and so ugly can make so many films. My friends are deeply disgusted that the world has fallen for my elaborate lies," he laughs as he goes on to recount his most memorable meeting with Hollywood director/actor Quentin Tarantino.
“Tarantino was a lot more real and humble than I expected. What impressed me most was his immense absence of ego.” Even as he grapples with the larger social issues in life and works towards bringing about a positive change, Rahul is trying to make his 10-year-old niece more cinema literate. And the latest national craze, Chak De garners an “It’s a simplistic story of mainstream cinema made with sense and sensibility” from him. It’s not surprising that Rahul Bose’s favourite dialogue in a film is from the classic Rebel Without A Cause where James Dean’s answer to the question “What are you rebelling against?” elicits a cool “What have you got?” from him.
