When
Ram Gopal Varma roped in
Urmila Matondkar for Drohi, no one had thought that the filmmaker and the actress’ collaboration would blossom into a friendship of a lifetime and also a formidable partnership in both their film careers. While Drohi didn’t appeal to the box office, RGV found his leading lady for Rangeela, which put Urmila in the spotlight and launched her as a legit star. Over the years, RGV and Urmila collaborated on films like Daud, Kaun,
Satya, and Jungle among others. The actress, who withdrew from acting a few years ago, flagged off her political career in 2019. She has recently joined a Mumbai-based party with full fanfare.
During a recent chat, we asked Ram Gopal Varma his thoughts on Urmila Matondkar’s political career and what he makes of her journey so far. The filmmaker said, “Honestly, I don’t know what she has done and which party she has joined. Forgive me, if I get the names of some of our leaders also wrong. I am not joking! My interest in politics is really quite low. So, I can’t comment on her decision to join a party. For me, she is a wonderful person with who I enjoyed working. Urmila gradually lost interest in acting. I started working with other artistes. But we have stayed in touch, and we connect once in a while. I have no idea about her political interests. Actually, I am not interested in politics at all. I am interested in a person’s psychology. For instance, Sarkar, the film, was a window into a man’s political psychology, and not his politics as such.”
