The most recent comeback has been that of dancing diva Madhuri Dixit in Aaja Nachle, in which she played a dance instructor. The movie only did average business at the box office and Madhuris performance didnt exactly wow audiences. But diehard fans didnt complain. Actress Arya Menon says, Although the movie didnt do well at the box office, I was glad to see Madhuri act and dance again. Film critic BB Nagpal says that for an actress to make a successful comeback, she must choose roles that suit her age. Audiences will be able to relate to them better that way, he says. Model Ritu Mazumdar agrees that comebacks work when actresses do roles befitting their age and appearance. Everybody likes to see their fave actresses back on screen, but they should be able to carry off the roles with no clumsiness, she points out. Hema Malini returned to films after a hiatus, starring opposite Big B in Baghban, in which she played an old and loving mother. It was a box office hit and the Dream Girl of yore proved shed lost none of her charm. Nagpal also feels that when actresses make a comeback after several years, it works to their advantage. When they reappear after a break of 7-8 years, theyre eagerly welcomed back by viewers. And if theyre glamorous despite their age, then all the better, he says. Actresses shouldnt make comebacks without a purpose, says fashion photographer Ashish Charan. They should be careful about choosing their comeback roles, says Ashish. He points to Manisha Koirala, who made a comeback with movies like Sirf and Mehbooba, but failed to make an impact. The effervescent Juhi Chawla, meanwhile, has been a hit in movies like Jhankaar Beats and Salaam-E-Ishq, playing a dutiful wife and responsible mother in both. Id like to see Juhi again in a comic role and as a central character, says Ritu. Few actresses are able to defy age the way she does. Kajol also made a much-anticipated comeback in Fanaa opposite Aamir Khan and later with hubby Ajay Devgan in U, Me Aur Hum. While the movies may have fared indifferently, her performances were appreciated. Arya says every actor should be given the opportunity to make a comeback. A second innings is often more impressive than the first, and audiences always want to see their favourite stars back on screen. Its only about choosing the right kind of roles, she says.
