The year's highest grosser remains Ali Abbas Zafar's 'Sultan'. Starring Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma in lead roles, Sultan hit theatres on July 6, 2016.

Sultan was a fictional account of a wresters fight on the field and the fight within. It amassed Rs 300 Cr at the box office.

Biggest money-spinners of 2016


Dangal
Again with wrestling at the heart of the storyline, Nitesh Tiwari's 'Dangal' that is fast breaking box office records, is turning out to be one of the biggest grosser of the year so far. Current collections for this Aamir Khan starrer stand at Rs 155 Cr and the number is expected to go up significantly in the days to come.

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story
'M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story' was another top earner this year. A biopic on the life of Captain Cool Mahendar Singh Dhoni, the film starred Sushant Singh Rajput, Kiara Advani and Disha Patani in the lead roles. Owing to Dhoni's great fan following across India and the world, the frenzy around the film was no surprise. It hit theatres on Septmeber 30 and collected a total of Rs 133 Cr at the box office.

Airlift
Also setting the cash registers ringing this year was the Akshay Kumar-Nimrat Kaur starrer 'Airlift'. With a solid plot going for it and excellent performances to boot, the film was a great watch. It released on January 22 and collected Rs 129 Cr. Based on the true story of evacuation of Indians from Kuwait, at a time when the country was under an attack from Iraq, 'Airlift' remains one of the most memorable films of the year.

Rustom
Another Akshay Kumar starrer made the cut to the highest earning films of the year. With total collections standing at Rs 127.42 Cr, 'Rustom' co-starring Illeana D'Cruz and Esha Gupta was a riveting watch. Directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, the film clashed at the box office with Hrithik Roshan's big ticket release 'Mohenjo Daro'.
