IIT graduate turned US taxi driver shares his struggles with Vir Das, dreams of returning to India

Vir Das recently drew attention to the story of an Indian taxi driver in the US who holds an impressive background as an IIT Bombay graduate with a PhD and a former scientist. It highlights the contrast between academic achievement and the challenges faced in a foreign land.

The actor shared his experience of meeting the driver at San Jose airport. Although the driver appeared uncomfortable behind the wheel, he maintained a polite demeanor. Their conversation soon transitioned to Hindi, offering a sense of comfort amid the challenges of living away from home. During their exchange, the driver recounted his story of layoffs and the struggle for financial stability, explaining that his current role as a cab driver was a necessary step, far removed from the academic rigor of his scientific background.



The story of the IIT graduate shows the unpredictable nature of life. After excelling at a top Indian university and doing advanced research, he now finds himself on a very different path. He openly admits to missing home every day, longing for a simpler life without mortgages and the pressures of the American dream. However, his responsibilities and practical concerns keep him from returning home, making it a difficult choice.

Das found the interaction with the taxi driver both humbling and reflective. Despite his own success, he felt like the "dumbest person in the room" next to someone with such an impressive academic background.

Currently, Vir Das is in the US as part of his Mindfull tour. He recently received the Best Comedy Award at the 2023 International Emmy Awards for "Landing."
