Vijay Varma’s journey from selling SIM cards to silver screen: How the 'Suriya 43' star turned struggles into stardom

Starting his acting journey with the short film 'Shor', Vijay Varma has established himself as a versatile actor and he is now making his Tamil debut with 'Suriya 43'.

Before he became one of Bollywood’s most compelling performers, Vijay Varma’s life was far from the glitz of cinema. The actor once hustled through multiple odd jobs and self-doubt before discovering his passion for acting. Coming from a protective Marwari household, Vijay had no film background, just determination to find what truly excited him.

From selling SIM cards to surviving rough days

“I must have done around five different courses—software engineering, event management, B.Com, even a call centre training program,” Vijay revealed in a conversation with Rhea Chakraborty. “Nothing clicked for me.”

Among his many jobs, one stood out for its sheer grind—selling SIM cards for Idea Cellular. “I used to go around selling packages and SIM cards,” he said, recalling long, tiring days. Reporting to a boss who owned a popular mobile brand showroom, Vijay was sent on daily rounds 30–40 kilometres away, regardless of weather.

One day I told my boss...

“I was raised like a girl in a protective household. So that rough terrain was a big shock,” he said. Yet, even in those difficult times, his sense of humour stayed alive.

Vijay added, “One day I told my boss, ‘I’ll put my photo in your showroom. I’ll become the brand ambassador.’ And now, I’ve become successful… but there is no Nokia!”

Finding light in theatre and film

When everything else failed, acting found him. After being rejected once from FTII (Film and Television Institute of India), Vijay turned to theatre in Hyderabad, secretly performing under the guise of college attendance. “The first time I went on stage, I got claps and laughter. That was it—I knew this was what I wanted,” he said.

Later, he got into FTII, marking the beginning of an inspiring journey.

From selling SIM cards to becoming one of India’s most versatile actors, Vijay Varma’s story proves that dreams find a way—even if the road is 40 kilometres long.

Vijay Varma's work front

After receiving decent reviews for 'IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack', Vijay will be next seen in the most awaited film tentatively titled 'Suriya 43'. The movie is directed by Sudha Kongara and also features Suriya, Dulquer Salmaan, Fahadh Faasil and many others in pivotal roles. Vijay will be also seen in the TV series 'Matka King'.
