On Monday, swelling crowds, unexpected rain and irked college authorities played spoilsport as the cast and crew of No One Killed Jessica tried to can two sequences at the campus. It was the last day of admissions at the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), and students who had come for admission were pleasantly surprised when they found actress Vidya Balan there.
Vidya plays the role of Jessica Lall’s sister Sabrina in the flick.
The crew had reached the location at 7 in the morning, but, the crowd stalled the shooting for several hours, continuously mobbing Vidya for autographs. A unit source says, “Vidya was mobbed, in the positive sense of course, for autographs. In fact, she must have signed at least a hundred!” Once the crowd dissipated in the afternoon, the shooting started again. It was a courtroom sequence, for which, a section of the campus, had been converted to resemble the Patiala House court.
Crew member Abhishek Banerjee has a cameo in the film and portrays the role of a pickpocket, trying to navigate the crowd outside the courtroom. This was the first scene canned. This is when the convicts and Sabrina Lall go to court for the first time. Interestingly, the policemen in the scene were wearing their winter uniform. In TOI’s earlier report on the shooting of the film at a cemetery in Khan Market, both Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji were also dressed in winter clothes.
The source tells us, “There were two courtroom episodes in the story. The first one was when Manu was acquitted and the second when he was charged. Both the scenes had to be shot, one in summer clothes and the other in winter clothes.” But, when the shooting for the second scene started, it began raining again, and the light was lost for the day. However, due to the hullabaloo around shoot in the campus, the crew will now not return to the campus to complete the sequence. In all probability, they will shoot the sequence in Mumbai, where the next schedule of the movie will begin in May.
The second sequence was shot in the older part of the university’s building, which houses the computer science department. It depicts the entry and exit of the convicts in the the courtroom. The entire alley was sealed. Two actors were part of the scene, one presumably playing Manu Sharma, and the other Vikas Yadav.
The next scene was that of Vidya coming to the court. But rain played spoilsport and the shoot was wrapped for the day.
