People often talk about the changing times in Bollywood, where the traditional definition of a heroine is evolving to bring nuanced and unconventional female characters on screen. But
Vaani Kapoor doesn’t necessarily subscribe to these narratives. She believes that actresses from the ’80s and ’90s were already playing strong, empowering characters. She says, “Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi played many empowering roles. I have grown up watching their films and getting inspired by them. I feel that there were many roles written around women, such as in Lamhe. Some films were ahead of their time, too. Phir beech mein kahin gadbad ho gayi, and now we are back on track. It depends on the producer and director and what they are trying to say through their films.”
Vaani, who played a detective in Mandala Murders, says she is not bothered by the length of the role as long as it has some substance to it. The actress shares, “Sometimes, when I’m just sitting in a narration, I think, ‘Come on! Not an eye-candy role once again.’ I don’t want to play just a love interest. Give her some substance, make the role a little substantial.
During the narration, I can already feel the audience thinking, ‘Iska role toh kuch nahi tha, why was she even there?’ Having said that, all characters command respect. No role is big or small for me. I give my 100 per cent to create an impact with every character I play.”

After working on action-heavy projects like War and handling firearms in Mandala Murders, Vaani is now keen to take on full-fledged action roles. When asked who she’d like to share screen space with in such a film, she responds, “I have seen
Katrina Kaif do some solid action in movies, so maybe her.
Anushka Sharma would also be good. I miss seeing her on screen a lot. I used to love watching her as she is a very authentic and real actor.”
