1/5

Dilip Kumar in Ram Aur Shyam

This film is a quintessential example of the "separated at birth twins with contrasting personalities" trope. Dilip Kumar brilliantly portrayed Ram, the timid and oppressed brother, and Shyam, the fearless and boisterous one. His masterful performance in differentiating the two characters, making them believable yet distinct, set a high bar for future double roles and remains a benchmark for acting schools.

2/5

Sanjeev Kumar in Angoor

Based on Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors, Angoor is a masterful comedy of mistaken identities. Sanjeev Kumar, alongside Deven Verma, both played double roles as two pairs of identical twins. Sanjeev Kumar's nuanced comedic timing and his ability to distinguish between the two characters, despite the constant confusion, is a testament to his acting prowess and makes Angoor a timeless classic.

3/5

Sridevi in ChaalBaaz

Taking the Seeta Aur Geeta template and injecting it with Sridevi's unique brand of comedic brilliance and raw energy, ChaalBaaz presented her in a memorable double role as the timid Anju and the feisty Manju. Her ability to embody two such contrasting personalities, especially in the comedic sequences, is a highlight of her illustrious career and made the film a runaway success.

4/5

Hema Malini in Seeta Aur Geeta

Following the success of Ram Aur Shyam, Ramesh Sippy adapted the same formula with a female lead, and Hema Malini delivered a tour-de-force performance. She effortlessly switched between the docile, submissive Seeta and the spirited, street-smart Geeta. Her energy and conviction in both roles made this film a massive hit and solidified her "Dream Girl" status.

5/5

Amitabh Bachchan in Don

While Amitabh Bachchan has portrayed numerous double roles (including a triple role in Mahaan), his portrayal of the ruthless crime lord Don and his innocent lookalike Vijay is perhaps his most iconic. The film's gripping plot, iconic dialogues, and Bachchan's suave portrayal of Don juxtaposed with Vijay's everyman charm made it a cult classic and inspired a successful remake.
