‘Guide’ which premiered in 1965 became a trailblazer in the Hindi film industry with its audacious storytelling, memorable songs and morally ambiguous character with its release. For a number of years fans of Hindi films did not know that Dev Anand’s classic was also filmed in English at the same time, concurrently with its Hindi-language counterpart. While the Hindi adaptation 'Guide' has remained in continuous release since its premiere, the English version of the film has been largely forgotten until recently.

The Hindi version of ‘Guide’, directed by Vijay Anand and starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman became one of the most popular productions in the history of Indian cinema. What has been less frequently discussed is that the same storyline was also shot in English and became part of one of a very few Indian films having been produced in two languages.

While the Hindi ‘Guide’ drew inspiration from R.K. Narayan’s novel 'The Guide' took creative liberties to suit Indian sensibilities. The English version, however, was scripted by Nobel Prize–winning author Pearl S. Buck and directed by American filmmaker Tad Danielewski. Despite sharing the same lead actors, the tone and narrative approach of the two films differed sharply.

In the Hindi ‘Guide’, Dev Anand portrayed Raju, a charismatic tour guide whose life moves from ambition and romance to guilt, downfall, and eventual spiritual awakening. Unlike conventional heroes of the time, Raju was morally flawed, manipulative, and impulsive, a portrayal that felt daring and refreshingly human to audiences.

A major reason for the Hindi film’s iconic status was its music by S.D. Burman. Songs like 'Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai' and 'Piya Tose Naina Lage Re' became eternal favourites. The former was famously shot at Chittorgarh Fort in extreme heat, with Waheeda Rehman dancing barefoot, a detail she later recalled while speaking about the physically demanding shoot.

Despite Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman reprising their roles, the English ‘Guide’ struggled to find its place. R.K. Narayan reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with both adaptations, feeling they drifted away from his original work. The English version, caught between Hollywood and Indian cinema styles, failed to secure strong distribution and was eventually shelved.

Film enthusiasts were taken by surprise in 2007 when the English ‘Guide’ resurfaced at the Cannes Film Festival, over 40 years after it was made. The screening reignited discussions on film preservation and cultural memory. While the Hindi ‘Guide’ endured as a cinematic landmark, its English counterpart faded because it lacked the cultural intimacy and emotional resonance that made the Hindi version immortal.
