Guru Dutt Was Not His Real Name

Guru Dutt was born as Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone in Bangalore in 1925. He later adopted the name “Guru Dutt” as a screen identity, inspired by spiritual and artistic leanings. Interestingly, his family hailed from the Saraswat Brahmin community of Karnataka, and he was fluent in several languages, including Bengali, Hindi, and Kannada.

He Was a Trained Dancer Before Becoming a Director

Before entering films, Guru Dutt was trained at Uday Shankar's India Culture Centre in Almora, where he studied classical dance and drama. His early artistic inclinations were deeply influenced by this training. He later worked as a choreographer at Prabhat Film Company, which gave him a foothold in cinema.

He Was Initially Rejected by Bombay Talkies

Guru Dutt once applied to work at the prestigious Bombay Talkies studio early in his career but was rejected. It was Dev Anand, a close friend from his early struggling days, who gave him his first significant opportunity by inviting him to direct "Baazi" (1951) under the Navketan banner. That film marked the beginning of his career as a successful director.

He Made a Film That Was Never Released

Very few know about “Gauri”, a film Guru Dutt had completed shooting in the early 1950s. The film starred Geeta Bali and was reportedly shelved for reasons unknown—possibly due to financial or creative disagreements. The negatives of the film are now considered lost, making it one of Bollywood’s great “what if” stories.

His Death Is Still Surrounded by Mystery

Though officially ruled as a suicide by overdose in 1964, Guru Dutt's death has long been a subject of speculation and heartbreak. He had attempted suicide twice before, struggled with alcoholism and depression, and was going through marital discord with singer Geeta Dutt. Some biographers and family members still believe it might have been accidental, as he had reportedly made plans for future films just days before his death.
