Vocalist and Classical Singer Pandit Bhimsen Joshi: (February 4, 1922 – January 24, 2011) Legendary vocalist and recipient of Bharat Ratna, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi enthralled generations of connoisseurs with his renditions of Hindustani classical music.

Joshi sang for several films, including Basant Bahar (1956), Tansen (1958) and Ankahee (1985).
Maqbool Fida Husain (September 17, 1915 – June 9, 2011): Widely regarded as the “Picasso of India”, famous artist M. F. Husain died in London following a heart attack. He was more of a self-taught artist and he even painted cinema hoardings during his initial days. Husain has been in centre of many controversies during his life-time including that of painting Hindu deities in sexually suggestive poses.
Film Actor Shammi Kapoor (October 21, 1930 – August 14, 2011): Hailed as one of the most entertaining actors, Shammi Kapoor died due to kidney failure. Making his debut with film Jeevan Jyoti, he gave many hits like Dil Deke Dekho, Rajkumar, Janwar, Teesri Manzil, Andaz, Tumsa Nahin Dekha etc. He was the recipient of Filmfare award for the best actor as well as the best supporting actor in the years 1968 and 1982 respectively.
Artist Jehangir Sabavala (August 23, 1922 – September 02, 2011): Jehangir Sabavala, the pioneer of Indian modern art, whose career spanned over 60 years, passed away after battling lung cancer for two years. A recluse to many, Sabavala was someone who was always looked up to in the ever-changing field of art sensibility.
Cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (January 5, 1941 – September 22, 2011): Nicknamed Tiger Pataudi, former captain of Indian cricket team, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi died following an acute lung infection. He was the ninth Nawab of Pataudi until 1971. Recipient of Arjuna Award and Padmashri, Pataudi played in 46 Test matches for India between 1961 and 1975.

Ghazal singer and composer Jagjit Singh (February 8, 1942 – October 10, 2011): Referred to as the king of ghazals, famous ghazal singer, composer and music director Jagjit Singh succumbed to brain hemorrhage. Known to have simplified the genre for a layman, Jagjit Singh was experimental and sang several songs for films like Prem Geet, Saath Saath and Arth in the early 80’s. His overall work was spread over more than 65 film and non-film albums.
Singer, lyricist and filmmaker Bhupen Hazarika (September 8, 1926 – November 5, 2011): Bhupen Hazarika is acknowledged widely for introducing Hindi films to the sounds and folk music of Assam and Northeast India. His songs, written and sung mainly in the Assamese language by himself, have been translated and sung in many languages, most notable in Bengali and Hindi.
Filmmaker and actor Dev Anand (September 26, 1923 – December 3, 2011): His career spanning 65 long years, Dev Anand acted in almost 115 Hindi films out of which 110 had him in the lead role. He was honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2001 and Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2002 for his overall contribution to Indian cinema.
Cartoonist Mario Miranda (1926 – 11 December 2011): Based in Loutolim, Goa, the world renowned cartoonist, Mario Miranda famously captured vignettes of Goan life on canvas in his trademark style for over two decades. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and Padma Shri in 1988.
Farewell, Dubeyji! (1936- December 25, 2011) One of the doyens of Indian theatre, Satyadev Dubey passed away Sunday morning. The 75-year-old playwright and director was hospitalised and in a coma since September . An inspiration for theatre aspirants, Dubeyji, as he was fondly called, worked with playwrights like Vijay Tendulkar, Evam Inderjit, Dharamvir Bharati, Mohan Rakesh and Girish Karnad and actors like the late Amrish Puri, Amol Palekar, Naseeruddin Shah and Sonali Kulkarni. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1971. He won the 1978 National Film Award for Best Screenplay for Shyam Benegal’s Bhumika and 1980 Filmfare Best Dialogue Award for Junoon. In 2011, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.
