EXCLUSIVE! Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Terry Crews says, 'I would love to dance in a Bollywood film'; adds, ‘Shah Rukh Khan is a super international star’
Terry Crews, 56, actor, host and former NFL player best known for Brooklyn Nine-Nine (B99) and America’s Got Talent, was recently in Mumbai for a whirlwind trip. “For all my life, I’ve always wanted to visit India. It’s such an exotic and beautiful place,” he tells us. Fresh off his Mumbai stop and back home in Los Angeles, Crews speaks about his long-standing fascination with Indian culture and why Bollywood feels like a world he’s meant to step into.
‘The one thing I love about Indian culture is how vibrant & beautiful it is’During his short but packed stay in Mumbai, Crews made sure to sample the local cuisine. “I tried some of the paneer dishes. I always eat Indian food like dal and garlic naan in LA. We love it. I didn’t get a chance to go really far out simply because it was just a short visit,” he shares.
He adds, “The one thing I love about the culture is how vibrant and beautiful it is. I wanted to see it firsthand because it’s true that a lot of Americans never get to see that part of the world.”
‘Everybody around the globe wants what India has’Crews, who has appeared in films such as The Expendables series and White Chicks, says he has long admired Bollywood and recently met Suniel Shetty. “What I love is the drama of Bollywood, and Suniel Shetty is one of the best. To meet him in person was incredible,” he says. He also shared a picture with Ranveer Singh on social media recently after they met in the UAE.
But it’s not just the stars that draw him in, but the spirit of Indian cinema itself. He adds, “Everybody around the globe wants what India has simply because it really satisfies a need in so many ways. I’m a big fan of music and dance. In fact, I am a dancer first. When you look at the culture and the way they’ve incorporated big musical performances into the movies, you don’t get that in America. It comes along once in a blue moon, like a Wicked. When I watch these major stars dancing to the amazing music, I miss it. It reminds me of the old Hollywood.”
‘Shah Rukh Khan is a super international star’Crews says he would love to be part of a Bollywood film someday. “I would love to dance, just like the stars in Bollywood. I want to mention how Shah Rukh Khan has become this super international star. I haven’t met him yet, but I’m looking forward to that. To me, he is a true example of Tom Cruise-level Indian talent that has taken over the world. His brand and his name is like those of Cristiano Ronaldo. It’s enormous.”
As for upcoming work, Crews says he’s in no rush to take up just anything. “I’ve been offered a few TV opportunities, but they just haven’t been good. When you do a show that’s as good as Brooklyn Nine-Nine, you become choosy,” he concludes.
