Tamannaah Bhatia breaks silence on doing intimate scenes in Jee Karda: ‘It’s completely orchestrated like a dance or fight sequence’
Tamannaah Bhatia, who faced criticism for her intimate scenes in the 2023 series Jee Karda, has now spoken at length about the process of filming such sequences. The actress clarified that intimate scenes are far from spontaneous or provocative, they’re entirely choreographed, much like a dance or action sequence.
In Jee Karda, Tamannaah played Lavanya, a woman caught in the web of modern-day relationships, with Suhail Nayyar essaying her partner Rishabh Rathore and Aashim Gulati playing a singer named Arjun Gill. The show delves into the complexities of adult friendships and relationships, and features a few intimate scenes between the trio, which sparked backlash online.
‘Like picking up a cup and taking a sip’
Opening up about how such scenes are actually shot, Tamannaah told Lallantop, “When you're on set, there's an intimacy coordinator, a director, and a cameraperson present. Teams for hair, makeup, and costume are also there. It’s just like picking up a cup and taking a sip—it’s completely orchestrated. You know you're going to pick up the cup, take a sip, and then put it down. These scenes are just as choreographed. Everyone knows what they’re doing.”
The actress further shared that the presence of an intimacy coordinator helps ensure that both actors are comfortable and respected.
“The intimacy coordinator explains certain rules—these are the things that might make you uncomfortable and should be avoided. Both actors involved in the scene are spoken to about what makes them uncomfortable. If you say something makes you uneasy, and the other actor agrees, it’s worked around,” she added.
Breaking her ‘no-kissing clause’ for growth
Tamannaah, who maintained a “no-kissing clause” in her contracts for the majority of her career, broke that personal rule for Lust Stories 2. Reflecting on that decision, she admitted that it was about pushing herself out of a self-imposed box.
“By sticking to that rule, I was limiting myself,” she said.
