Suraj Pancholi, who is accused of abetting actress Jiah Khan’s suicide, approached a sessions court for bail after the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate’s court remanded him in judicial custody till June 27. The decision on his bail is likely to be made today. The public prosecutor, while seeking further police custody for Suraj, told the court that the police had come across the word ‘rape’ in the six-page letter written by Jiah before she hanged herself.
The prosecutor further alleged that Suraj had deleted text messages sent to him by Jiah. The police want to retrieve these messages to investigate whether any of them are relevant to Jiah’s suicide.
Currently, the police have two letters recovered from a domestic help in the Pancholi family. The cops want to check whether the letters were written by Suraj to Jiah. The prosecutor argued that this could be done only after collecting Suraj’s handwriting samples.
However, advocate Zameer Khan, defending Suraj, said the statements of the witnesses had been recorded and there was no need to increase Suraj’s custody period.
After hearing both sides, the court remanded Suraj
in judicial custody. Suraj was arrested on June 10 for allegedly driving Jiah to suicide, on the basis of a six-page letter left behind by her which described their rocky relationship and how she was tired of his “womanising”. He spent two days in police lock-up and has now been sent to judicial custody till June 27.
