Sunny Deol has been riding a remarkable wave of success ever since ‘Gadar 2’ (2023), directed by Anil Sharma and co-starring Ameesha Patel, smashed box office records upon its August 11 release. He carried that momentum forward with ‘Jaat’ (2025), an action drama that performed steadily in cinemas. The actor then kicked off 2026 with ‘Border 2’, a war drama sequel that crossed Rs. 300 crore, further cementing his mass appeal. 2026 was supposed to be the "year of Sunny Deo" with a string of back-to-back releases, but the much-anticipated emotional drama 'Gabru' has hit another roadblock. Originally slated for May 8, the film has been pulled from the calendar, marking its second major delay this year.
‘Gabru’ release delayed again
The much-anticipated emotional drama ‘Gabru’, helmed by
Shashank Udapurkar and backed by producer Vishal Rana, was initially slated to hit theatres on May 8, 2026. However, fans will now have to wait longer as the film’s release has been postponed yet again. The makers are expected to announce a fresh release date soon, keeping audiences eager for its arrival.
According to the reports by Bollywood Hungama, “Gabru has been postponed and won’t arrive in cinemas on May 8. The makers plan to lock the new release date in a few days, after which they’ll make an official announcement.” This delay marks the second shift for the film, which was earlier planned for a March 13 release before being pushed to May.
Why ‘Gabru’ faced multiple delays
Initially, ‘Gabru’ was rescheduled from March 13 due to the holy month of Ramzan and the impending release of ‘Dhurandhar The Revenge’, an action-packed entertainer that arrived in cinemas on March 19. The strategic shift aimed to ensure better box office performance and avoid a clash with another high-profile film.
Salman Khan’s special cameo appearance in 'Gabru'
One of the film’s biggest highlights is a special appearance by Salman Khan. As per earlier reports, the superstar has an extended cameo comprising three scenes. A source shared, “There was a requirement of a star and the makers knew that Salman Khan fit the bill completely. Salman was approached and he loved the part and its contribution to the film. He quietly shot the film more than a year ago and it has shaped up well. His cameo in Gabru is all heart. It is adorable and also highly entertaining. He has 3 scenes in total, hence, it’s an extended special appearance.”
With ‘Gabru’ stepping away from its May 8 window, two other films have taken over the date. ‘Aakhri Sawal’, featuring Sanjay Dutt, Neetu Chandra, Namashi Chakraborty, Amit Sadh, Sameera Reddy, and Tridha Choudhury, is set to release alongside ‘Dadi Ki Shaadi’, a light-hearted family entertainer starring Kapil Sharma, Neetu Kapoor, and Sadia Khateeb.
What’s next for Sunny Deol?
Looking ahead, Sunny Deol has a packed slate in 2026. His period drama ‘Lahore 1947’, produced by Aamir Khan and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, is expected to arrive in August. Additionally, he will portray Lord Hanuman in ‘Ramayana’, slated for a grand Diwali release, making it one of the year’s most awaited mythological spectacles.
