Straight from the heart

Paresh Rawal talks to TOI about his famous comic timing and his role as a director.
Straight from the heart
You see a film, and think he cant be better than this from playing antagonist to actor with brilliant comic timing, Paresh Rawal has outperformed each successive role with his versatility.
Right now, he is all geared up to surprise the audience with a couple of more great performances.
One of his films is an adpatation of a Gujarati play that was incidentally directed by him.
1x1 polls
Talking about the film, he says, Its a comic thriller. The play was a three-hour long affair. The film has been condensed to a length of two hours, but that has not cut into the heart and soul of the film. Does he have great expectations from it? The essence of the play has been retained. The high point of the film is that it has some of the finest actors like Boman Irani and Nasseruddin Shah. I am very happy with the way the film has turned out.
For somebody who has been in the industry for so long and essayed so many different roles, Paresh is more than what meets the eye. What is his character in the film like? My character is that of a jobless man. A very realistic character, he is an amalgamation of the good and the bad. He is intelligent, an opportunist and greedy. He does not really want to kill anyone, but how and why he does it becomes clear as the plot unravels. He is one of those characters who is very easy to identify with.
The man who won accolades with his role in Hera Pheri is modest when it comes to taking credit for his comic talent. I dont think it has anything to do with me. All the credit for it goes to my writers/ directors who sketch my roles, he says modestly. Now, thats quite a touch of restraint from an actor whose exceptional comic timing has been much talked about. His flexibility as a performer is nothing new. He tells us about his just-released flick co-starring Abhay Deol, I play three characters, each different from the other. It was challenging and entertaining to work on such different roles in a single film.
So, is it time to hang up his boots as an actor and settle into the directors chair yet? Full-ime directing can wait. Not so soon, he informs us. Well, we are definitely relieved. Much as we would like to see him in the directors chair, we dont want to miss out on his amazing performances. Do we, guys?
